For Chad Ollom, landing on the Willow Springs Ranch after his teaching career crashed and burned last year was a lesson in irony, considering he’d sworn off all things related to horses and cowboys after a near fatal fall as a child. Now with a new mission in life, Chad plans to bring critically ill children to the ranch for a special celebration.
Aging rodeo cowboy Jesse Duran lives life eight seconds at a time, and whether it’s broncos or men, it’s always been get on and get off before anyone gets hurt. When he’s required to take a break from the circuit and ends up on the WSR, the enticing ass of a stand-offish teacher turned contractor might just be enough challenge to keep him entertained for a week or two.
As attraction flares, personal boundaries start to crumble, and the lines between seducer and seduced begin to blur. When the series of on-going attacks against the WSR moves from sabotage to arson, Jesse steps up to help, but when Chad is forced to return to his past to face charges of abuse, the men of the WSR want to know if Jesse will stick or leave Chad hanging.
Hanging Chad is book 4 in the Willow Springs Ranch Series and is my favorite of the books so far. It was a bit more complex than the previous stories having both a moving plot as well as character/relationship development which were both intertwined. In the previous books, there was either character/relationship growth or plot but they did not really link together. This story has now added that next level to the author’s writing in this series and I really enjoyed the outcome.
The first layer to this story is the relationship between Chad, who we met in previous book, and Jesse, and aging rodeo rider. These men started off on the wrong foot and it was quite humorous. I could feel Chad’s frustration and Jesse’s smugness. But slowly the character development kicked in and the reader got to see another side of both men. These revelations were what allow the relationship to move forward and grow into something meaningful and satisfying.
As far as the characters go, right from the start, the author gave details that made both men relatable and likable. Jesse garnered sympathy from the reader after a scene showing that life as he was accustomed, may just be over. The author also gained sympathy for Chad by giving details of his childhood and the scars that has left not only physically but emotionally as well. Then as the story progressed, the reader learned that Jesse was not all ego but was surprisingly perceptive and had depth. Chad showed growth by overcoming his fear of horses in order to rescue Jesse. Then Chad stepped up at the end and took what he wants. It was fun to see the little guy calling the shots for a change!
Finally, this story saw the overall plot ARC intensify. No longer was it just speculation, but the general and his men escalated to full out vandalism, wrongful child abuse accusations against Chad, and potential murder. But what for? I know why the men at the trip-T think they are doing this, but I think there is more to the general than we know so far. I need to keep reading this series to find out these answers!
I would also like to give a shout to the author for an amazing scene that just jumped out at me and really was my favorite scene in the entire book. It started out slow and tender with Jesse giving comfort as Chad admitted his fears. Then the comfort seamlessly transitioned to one of the hottest scenes so far in this series. It wasn’t forced or out of place. It wasn’t sex just to have sex. It happened organically and felt so natural. This is something that a lot of authors struggle to achieve. Great job!
