Moments in Time: Book One
Outside Collin Fitzpatrick’s dorm room is a dangerous place. Beyond his door the students of his small, conservative college think he’s straight, as does his Catholic family who’d disown him if they learned the truth. Inside, he’s safe with his incredibly sexy roommate Tanner D’Amico. Their room makes a perfect place to hide away and fall in love. The moment they cross the line from roommates to lovers, Collin becomes caught between their heavenly passionate encounters and the hellish reality that someone might find out and destroy everything. Tanner’s not used to being so confined, and wants to show the world how much he loves Collin. But Collin’s not sure he’s ready for the impact stepping outside will make.
We are here today to talk about Moment of Impact. What can you tell us about it?
Moment Of Impact is a m/m New Adult romance novel about two college roommates who fall in love. It’s a coming of age/coming out story and a friends-to-lovers journey. It’s also the first in a three-book series about these two characters. (But don’t worry, there are no cliffhangers. Each book is a complete story with its own happy ending. Cliffhangers are a pet peeve of mine as a reader so I’d never write a book with one.)
Tell us more about Collin and Tanner?
Collin and Tanner are twenty-year old roommates at a small, conservative liberal arts college. They’ve been friends for a few years but they’ve only been roommates the past several months. Collin is from a very old-school Catholic family in a nearby Connecticut town whereas Tanner was raised by very open-minded and free-spirited parents in New York City.
The story is told from Collin’s point of view as the focus of the book is on his path to self-discovery as he realizes that the feelings he’s secretly had for Tanner are quite mutual. Collin is sweet, passionate and torn between his upbringing and his feelings—he struggles with feelings of both immense relief that he’s finally able to express his truest desires and absolute terror about what that will mean for his future. Tanner is much more at peace with himself and in touch with his emotions, but his patience and love are put to the test as he embarks on this new relationship.
What about Moment of Impact makes you the most proud?
I’m most proud of how these two characters grown and change as individuals and as a couple in each of the three books in this series. I love watching the transformation characters make as their stories unfold. It was a pleasure to watch as Collin and Tanner overcame all the challenges they encountered.
If you could give one piece of advice to aspiring writers, what would it be?
Finish the book. Seriously. So many people start writing books and never finish them, then all they have is an unfinished project. You can tweak and change it all you want, but until you have the whole thing written it’s still just an incomplete work. Once you finish the book then you can edit it and re-edit it as many times as you need to so you can make it shine.
If you could move anywhere in the world and basically start over, where would you go and what would you do?
I actually kind of did that twelve years ago when I relocated to New Hampshire. I wasn’t at all happy where I used to live so I decided to make a complete change and move to a very small town in a state I’d never even visited. It was the best decision I ever made. I absolutely love living here in my tiny mountain-top town. Boston and the ocean are only an hour away by car, but on a daily basis I’m surrounded by a beautiful forest and I have a babbling brook running through my back yard. It’s the best of all worlds and the perfect place for me. I wouldn’t choose to live anywhere else. And I’m finally writing full time, which I’ve wanted to do since I was a kid but never thought would be a reality. I wouldn’t trade any of this for anything else.
If I had a second home (total pipe dream) it would be a little apartment in Florence, Italy. If I lived there part time I’d still write, I’d just eat a lot more gelato while I was doing it.
If you were having a coffee klatch, name five characters, each from a different book, with whom you’d like to share that special time with.
I prefer one-on-one time to coffee klatches. Can I take them each out for coffee individually so we can have more quality time together and I can get secrets out of them?
I’d like to have coffee with….
- Kingsley Edge from Tiffany Reisz’s Original Sinners series
- Holden Caulfield from JD Salinger’s TheCatcher In The Rye
- Harry Potter from JK Rowling’s Harry Potter series
- Westley from William Goldman’s The Princess Bride
- Edward Cullen from Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight
Rapid Fire Time
- Vodka or Tequila? Vodka (very bad tequila experience one time)
- Sausage or Hamburger? Sausage!
- Country or City? Country to live, city for vacation
- Favorite Color? Garnet red
- Any Tattoos or piercings? Five piercings (3 in one ear, 2 in the other); tattoo—maybe soon
- Love Story or Thriller? Love story (thrillers freak me out— I don’t like being scared)
- Fire or Ice? Both are beautiful; depends on my mood
- Morning or night? Night. I don’t believe in mornings.
What are you working on? What is next?
I’m currently working on two novels that are spin-offs about secondary characters from the second and third book in this series. My agent also has a m/f contemporary romance of mine out on submission (Moment Of Impact is my first m/m novel but I’ve been a published m/f contemporary romance author for three years).
The next releases I’ll have will be Moment Of Truth and Moment Of Clarity—books two and three of the Moments In Time series, due out in March and May. Collin and Tanner star in both of those books as they continue to explore their relationship together.
I’ll also have a co-written book (with my critique partner Karen Booth) releasing in the next few months. This will be a re-release of a previously published book that we’ve recently gotten the rights back to, so we’re going to add an epilogue and possibly a companion short story—keep an eye on my Twitter account (@karenstivali) or my blog (karenstivali.com) for more info on this and all my other book news!
