Prism Book Alliance would like to thank Liz Strange for taking the time to talk with us today about their retro title from MLR Press, David Lloyd Investigations #1-4. Prism recently reviewed David Lloyd Investigations #1-4. You can find the review here.

We are here today to talk about The David Lloyd Investigations series. What can you tell us about it?

David Lloyd Investigations is a contemporary mystery series set in 2000s-era Toronto, and follows the life of Private Investigator, and former Police Officer, David Lloyd. David was injured in a homophobic attack that left him with hearing loss and a bad knee, and prompted his career change to a Private Investigator. His work life brings him into contact with a motley crew of characters, from small time hustlers to international crime syndicates, and his home life offers its own set of challenges.

Tell us more about Jamie and David?

Jamie is a prosecuting attorney and David’s long-time boyfriend. In the first novel they have been together about five years though Jamie has not yet “come out”, which adds tremendous stress to their relationship.

What about this series makes you the most proud?

The thing that makes me most proud of this series is the all the positive feedback I’ve received – from praise for the writing, the storylines and how likeable the characters are.

If you could change one thing in any of the books in the series what would it be and why?

I’m not sure that I would change anything, but I’d sure love more time to write more books for the series.

Can you tell me a bit more about your inspiration for each mystery?

Missing Daughter, Shattered Family was inspired by a couple of things. Firstly the character of David came from a local event of a police who was attacked while out one evening. I changed the circumstances of that to a homophobic attack, and thus David’s backstory was born. The setting in the dance world was inspired by my kids, and the mental health and addictions issues were influenced by my “day job” for a health care organization that provided assistance for these types of issues.

A Fresh Set of Eyes was inspired by the West Memphis Three case that I have long had a fascination with.

Destination Unknown came from an article I read about the high rate of rapes, thefts and missing person from cruise ships.

Behind Closed Doors came from another article about a high profile business man who had been leading a double life.

Will we be hearing more from David, Jamie, and crew in the future?

Absolutely. I have two premises I’ve been toying with, and just need to pick one and get writing.

Anything else you want to tell us about this series?

Just that I’m really proud of his series, and I hope people will take a chance to read the first book.

Tell us about some of your other titles.

The Dark Kiss Trilogy is a paranormal romance series, following star-crossed vampire lovers.

The Embrace of Life and Death is a tale about a forbidden love between a vampire and an angel (m/m).

Erased is an action-sci-fi tale following a tough, career-military officer after she has been ‘erased” and become an enemy of her former employers.

Fair Folk in Knob’s End is a whimsical young adult novel based on Welsh mythology.

I have also written a number of short stories which have appeared in various anthologies.

Rapid Fire Time

  • Sausage or Hamburger? Hamburger
  • Coke or Pepsi? Coke
  • Alone or At a Party? Depends on my mood, but usually alone
  • Music or TV/Movies? Both
  • Porsche or Prius? Prius
  • Vanilla or Chocolate? Vanilla
  • Sweet or Savory? Savory
  • Fire or Ice? Fire—I am an Aries after all.

What are you working on? What is next?

I’m working on a couple of things ate the moment, two very different novels, and putting together my plan for the next David Lloyd novel.

Missing Daughter, Shattered Family

When a brutal homophobic attack ended David Lloyd’s career as a police officer, his life was changed forever. Five years later David is running his own private detective agency, where a missing person’s case comes to his attention. Digging into the circumstances of her disappearance forces David to realize he has not dealt with what happened to him, and that he can no loner deal with his long-time partner’s fear of being honest about their relationship.

Solving the case might not only bring peace to a shattered family, but could finally put David’s own demons to rest.

A Fresh Set of Eyes

A mother turns to David to help free her son and another young man from prison, where they have spent the last ten years for a double murder many feel they did not commit. The police investigation was spotty, the evidence non-existent, and yet someone had to pay for the vicious assault on two young brothers. Never one to shy away from a tough situation David agrees to look into the case, despite the tense situation with his partner’s family and the physical and emotional needs of the former-prostitute he’s taken under his wing.

With so many lives on the line, David must find a way to help them all without hurting the most important person – himself.

Destination Unknown

Tracking down the whereabouts of a girl last seen on a cruise ship takes David Lloyd far from the streets of Toronto and thrusts him into the seedy world of human trafficking.

Last seen departing a cruise ship in Newport, Curacao, Piper Falco is never heard from again. Though no body was found it seemed likely the brilliant Canadian university student had met a violent end. Her father asks David to look into the case when the investigation by the local authorities, and even the RCMP and Interpol, turns cold. What David finds opens his eyes to a world far from his comfortable life in urban Toronto, a world where young girls are subjected to sexual degradation, and human lives are nothing more than currency.

Behind Closed Doors

Ivan Holmes’ life is picture perfect to the public eye, but behind closed doors lies a web of deceit and exploitation.

A former client comes to David asking for help in finding a valuable painting that went missing in the wake of a sensationalized murder investigation. On the surface there is no clear connection between the two events, but the deeper David digs the clearer it becomes that the victim was not the charitable, moral man he seemed . The case has ties to international trade, local government officials, and the small mining town of Flin Flon, Manitoba. Yet most surprising is the link to a piece of David’s past for which he has never been able to find closure.

  1. Sounds interesting; love how some of the cases were inspired by real-life events. Thanks for the chance to win.

  2. Thanks for the offer. This series sounds interesting. I like stories where the total focus is not the romance…but I do love the romance too. 🙂
