Coming Out … Again!
A few weeks ago, I came out to my mother.
Oh, she’s known I’m gay for a long time now, so it’s not about that. This time, I came out to her about my writing. You see, I’ve been writing gay erotic romance for a while now, over a decade in fact. But I never said anything about my publishing to my parents. It just didn’t seem like something they needed—or I wanted them—to know. But lately, things have changed a bit. Maybe I’m just old enough to feel more comfortable about it, or maybe it just seemed like the right time. In all actuality, though, I think I was just waiting for the right book to be published.
I wrote a book a loooong time ago about a gay man who starts repossessing cars to make extra money and, eventually, is dragged into a murder mystery. At the time I wrote the book, there were no e-readers and no self-publishing, so I sent queries to agents and publishers and received all my self-addressed stamped envelopes back with rejections. Some were even half page photocopies. Wow. I have to admit, those hurt more than a full page letter.
So the book went into a drawer. Well, last year, I happened upon the file in my computer and read it through again and, you know what? It wasn’t bad. So I sent it off to Wilde City Press, who agreed that it wasn’t bad, and my editor, Jerry Wheeler, who’s edited my stories for many years, showed me how much better it could be. So I worked on the edits and it was published and now it’s available with the original title, Repossession is 9/10ths of the Law. It’s a humorous and wacky murder mystery, and I dedicated the book to my father, who died back in 2010. This was another deciding factor that helped convince me to “come out” to my mother. After being married to him for over fifty years, she misses him every day.
In the book, the main character, Alan, has been raised by his father, Everly. I took a few of my father’s more quirky traits and added a dash of spice and a bit of zing to come up with Everly. This book is not an erotic romance story. Instead, this book is a more traditional mystery, and I thought that it might be nice for my Mom to know I’ve been having a bit of success at the writing hobby I’d had since I was a teenager.
And, you know what? She loved it. She said it was funny and sweet and she was proud of me. She tucked away the paperback copy I signed for her and bought it for her Nook so she could preserve the paperback in its pristine condition. Also, so she could read in bed without turning on a light. I told her that my other books were quite a bit more racy, and she said that was fine, she read a lot of racy stuff my sister gives her. Well, okay then, you go 84-year-old Mom.
So, yeah, I came out to my mother as a published author, and she liked it. Imagine that.
If you’re interested in checking out my wacky mystery, Repossession is 9/10ths of the Law, you can find it at the links listed below. Stay warm, we’re one month away from the Vernal Equinox, and the days are lasting longer.

Soon Alan’s life is completely upturned as he is pulled into a mystery involving more bodies, a highly lethal new street drug, a mysterious man with a top hat and cane, raging dwarves, a house fire, a cranky police detective, and his crankier cat!
