If you stop running, you fall.

Jonah Pastern is a magician, a liar, a windwalker, a professional thief…and for six months, he was the love of police constable Ben Spenser’s life. Until his betrayal left Ben jailed, ruined, alone, and looking for revenge.

Ben is determined to make Jonah pay. But he can’t seem to forget what they once shared, and Jonah refuses to let him. Soon Ben is entangled in Jonah’s chaotic existence all over again, and they’re running together—from the police, the justiciary, and some dangerous people with a lethal grudge against them.

Threatened on all sides by betrayals, secrets, and the laws of the land, can they find a way to live and love before the past catches up with them?

This story is set in the world of the Charm of Magpies series.

Teresa’sView:

Well, that was a romp!! Jackdaw takes place in the world of A Charm of Magpies. We are introduced to Jonah in book three of that series, Flight of Magpies. I was so glad when I learned he was to have his own book.

Jonah, though a thief, is not a bad man, and the person he loves, Ben, must come to realize that for himself. Which is difficult after it appears Jonah betrayed him and left his life in ruins.

I loved the action and the windwalking in the story. The occurrence of magic in the otherwise historically accurate world of Magpies is one of my favourite things about the series in general. It keeps things interesting and moving.

I also enjoyed the way the flashbacks showed us Jonah and Ben’s former relationship and gave us insight into how Ben was feeling now. It gave firm reason for these two to be together, or not as the case may be, and gave a basis for the attraction and feelings motivating them.

Bottom line: if you loved A Charm of Magpies series, you must read this book. You will also get to see more of Stephen Day, Lord Crane, and Mr. Merrik.
