Monday Flash Fics ~ Brigham Vaughn: Outside the Margins

Join us as Brigham Vaughn goes Outside the Margins.

Brigham-Vaughn-OtMMonday Flash Fics

As I mentioned in a previous post, Helena Stone invited me to join her in writing flash fics.  We take turns picking an inspiration pic and have a week to write a short story (under 500 words, give or take).  We post it on Monday mornings at 7am EST.

I’m absolutely thrilled with the way the stories have turned out and some have proven to be quite a challenge. This week I posted a story written from a house’s POV.  Yes, I did say a house.  About halfway through I panicked and wondered what on earth made me think doing it would be a good idea.  Brainstorming with a few people helped though and now that it’s done I am quite pleased with the way it turned out.  The feedback I received was wonderful and although I might not have felt like it partway through, it was a worthwhile challenge.

Since I started the flash fics I’ve felt more productive.  Last week I wrote 15,000 words on the spin-off from the Equals series.  This week has been a bit slower, but still very productive so far and in general, I feel the creative juices flowing.

Monday Flash Fics Picture

More and more authors have expressed interest lately, so Helena and I will be opening the Monday flash fics to anyone.  Here’s how it’ll work:

  1. Join the Monday Flash Fics group on Facebook.
  2. On Monday, we will post the pic prompt for the following week.
  3. Write your story and keep it under 500 words.
  4. Post it on your blog on the following Monday.
  5. Post a link in the comments of the pic prompt in the Flash Fic group.

It’s meant to be a creative exercise for authors and something fun for readers to enjoy, so don’t sweat it.

Join us when the mood strikes and you have the time.  If you can’t manage to keep it under 500 words, well, we’re not going to hunt you down.  It’s a good challenge to limit the word count, but don’t stress if your final word count is more like 507.

Share links and comment on the blogs.

Feel free to submit inspiration pics in the group by attaching it as a file or sending a PM to either Helena or Brigham.

I hope you’ll join us.  It’s a wonderful opportunity for writers to expand their creativity and readers to enjoy stories by their favorite authors or discover new ones!

  1. Well, you managed to sell it to me. Oh. Wait. I’m already in 🙂

Great post Brigham. I can’t wait to see who will be joining us over the next few weeks. I’ve got a feeling it’s going to be even more fun from now on.
