Ethan Stone OtMNo GRL For Me

I have made a very difficult decision and it’s not one that came easily.

I will not be going to GRL this year. I had originally planned on going, after all I live on the west coast. Plus, by October DSP Publications will have re-released the first three Flesh books as well as the fourth book in the series. Being there with the fabulous new covers was something I was looking forward to.

It comes down to finances. I’ve just done my taxes and saw how much I made in writing this year. I don’t want to say exactly how much, but the overall cost of GRL would be around a quarter of what I made.

It’s more than just the cost of the ticket to attend, which I think is fair considering what is offered to authors, either featured or supporting. It’s the price of airfare, hotel, food, etc.

As much as I love seeing old friends and making new ones, it just isn’t feasible.

Instead, I’ll be using this year to regroup. To focus on not just what I should write, but where I should submit it. Should I stick with the genre I usually write in? Write sequels or new books?

I also plan on revitalizing and rejuvenating myself and my creativity by taking smaller trips with my family and boyfriend.

I prefer to think of this announcement as good news because I’m going to figure out what I need to be a better and happier person, which will in turn hopefully make me a better writer.

Wish me luck.

About Ethan Stone

Ethan Stone is an out and proud gay man. Which is fairly new in his life, the out part, not the gay part. He’s been queer his whole life, though he tried to deny it for years with a wonderful woman. The years in denial weren’t all bad, he has two amazing kids out of it. His son is a teenager and his daughter has made him a grandfather, three times over. A way too young grandfather.

Ethan recently returned to Oregon after almost a decade in Nevada. He no longer has a day job and is doing his best to make a living at this writing thing. If he can’t make a living, he at least wants to support his Mt. Dew and beef jerky addictions.

  1. Good luck!
Sometimes we need that step back to see through the clutter of our lives. Lots of small trips sound great, we did that last year – not so long between to put up with daily routines!

  2. Good luck Ethan. I will not attend GRL this year either, I can’t afford it. We see all the great photos everyone take, and enjoy them.

  3. Good luck. Cons are a mice way to meet other people but sometimes the expense out weigh the pro’s. Take time with friends and family, cons will always be there.

  4. Good luck. Disappointing, as it’s in my neck of the woods this year, so It’s my first time, but it’s perfectly understanding. We all need to take a step back sometimes and regroup or re-evaluate. Best of luck.
