After an attack by the Coalition leaves THIRDS Team Leader Sloane Brodie critically injured, agent Dexter J. Daley swears to make Beck Hogan pay for what he’s done. But Dex’s plans for retribution are short-lived. With Ash still on leave with his own injuries, Sloane in the hospital, and Destructive Delta in the Coalition’s crosshairs, Lieutenant Sparks isn’t taking any chances. Dex’s team is pulled from the case, with the investigation handed to Team Leader Sebastian Hobbs. Dex refuses to stand by while another team goes after Hogan, and decides to put his old HPF detective skills to work to find Hogan before Theta Destructive, no matter the cost.

With a lengthy and painful recovery ahead of him, the last thing Sloane needs is his partner out scouring the city, especially when the lies—however well intentioned—begin to spiral out of control. Sloane is all too familiar with the desire to retaliate, but some things are more important, like the man who’s pledged to stand beside him. As Dex starts down a dark path, it’s up to Sloane to show him what’s at stake, and finally put a name to what’s in his heart.

Caroline’sView:

I LOVE this series! Just thought I would get that out of the way.

Although the books focus on the team the first three books and now this one have concentrated on Dex and Sloane and as Book 5 looks to be Ash and Cael’s story I really hope Charlie will continue to feed my Team Leader hero worship and keep me updated on my favourite Alpha male characters. I mean can we really ever have enough of Dex and Sloane?

This book had a different feel for me as Sloane discovers feelings. Normally stoic and hard assed and believing himself too hurt and messed up to ever fall in love again it appears his Jaguar has other ideas as he becomes more and more out of control. I loved the feral side of Sloane in this book; the marking and the possessiveness and the fact that his human side couldn’t stop it even if he had wanted to; it was exactly what Dex needed and cemented their relationship once and for all.

Sloane is seriously injured at the start of this book – remember that damn cliff hanger from Book 3! Thankfully with him being a Therian he survives but it is a painful and long recovery. Dex is left shattered and angry that the coalition has come first after his lover and then his team, who he considers his family, and goes off like a one man wrecking ball determined to catch Beck Hogan and his team dead or alive before they can hurt anyone else.

There is a lot of soul searching for Dex as he drags his team into his undercover operation whilst lying to his team leader and lover. Sloane is no idiot and knows exactly what his partner is up to and is upset by his dishonesty. He is also terrified for his safety which raises more questions about the first Gen Therians as for the first time in his life he struggles to keep his Jaguar under control.

There was humour here too. The final chapter when Maddock’s arrives gripping ‘Old Betsy’ was hilarious and the perfect cliff-hanger. We now have to wait for the repercussions and for Cael and Ash’s story.
