The Fifth Son by Blaine D Arden ~ Book Review by Beverley

A romantic fantasy from Blaine D Arden…

The Fifth Son Title: The Fifth Son

Author: Blaine D Arden

Cover Artist: Simone

Rating: 4.0 of 5 Stars

A prince without power

In a land where magic is commonplace, Prince Llyskel has none. He can’t command spells, he has never been taught to fight, and as the fifth son of the King, he will never rule. Everyone believes he’s a weakling, most of all himself.

Powerlessness is Llyskel’s problem—and his pleasure. In his secret fantasies, the prince dreams of nothing more than finding himself helpless at another man’s hands… particularly the hands of Captain Ariv of the Guards.

Then Ariv makes Llyskel’s dream a reality, and as the powerless prince surrenders to the soldier’s desire, he finds his own true strength at last. But a web of royal politics is closing around Llyskel, threatening to tear him from his lover, and it will take all his newfound courage to escape…

The 2nd edition of this story… it was previously released through Storm Moon Press.

This is a lovely short story of sixty-six pages concerning a world where magic is a natural state. Llyskel is the fifth son of the King and Queen of this land, which means he was born without magic powers. His powerless state means his loving parents have always protected him, by having a guard with him wherever he goes, and refusing to allow him to join his brothers in training for the army.

He spends his spare time painting, beautiful talented renditions some of which are of the Captain of the Guard, Ariv. Llyskel has a very particular sexual fantasy involving the captain and his magic shooter. This is a very romantic story, which might have been a good introduction to a series. The two main characters exhibit great sexual tension between them, and there is a nice plot surrounding their burgeoning relationship and some really good world building, always a strength with this author.

I recommend this story for a sweet, sexy escape into fantasy. This edition has some tonal grey illustrations by Yana Goya within and a colourful evocative cover by Simone.
