The One Who Saves Me by Cardeno C. ~ Book Review by Paisley

The “Home” Collection by Cardeno C. has been re-released with new cover art. I have to say I miss the illustrations on the original covers, and even though the new covers look quite fabulous they also look like so many other books out there, and that’s a shame because the stories inside are unique and very fun.  I am a fan of Cardeno, and I love most all of her books. I have re-read the books in this series at different times over the years. For my Retro Reads reviews I read the collection again, and enjoyed spending time with my old friends.

Blurb:

t fourteen, Andrew Thompson and Caleb Lakes become best friends. As the years pass, they stand by each other through family trauma, school, and the start of their careers. They share their first sexual experiences, learning and experimenting, and they talk each other through countless dates and breakups.

Decades of trust and loyalty build a deep and abiding friendship, one that surpasses any relationship in their lives. But when the parameters of their unique friendship change, neither man knows how to break out of their established roles to build something new. After all, boyfriends come and go, but best friends are forever.

Paisley’sView:

Of all of the books in the Home collection this one is my least favorite. I think it’s because I am not a huge fan of either character. They spend most of the book as “best friends with benefits” I just don’t find that very romantic. In some of the other stories the two are referred to as “Bert & Ernie” because they are roommates that really aren’t just roommates. Everyone seems to believe that they belong together it just hasn’t happened in an romantic way.

The story covers a long period of time because the two have been friends for many years, but their love affair really only begins at the end of the story. In fact towards the end of the book Caleb says to Drew, “We’re just getting to the good part.”  That’s how I felt too – I was ready for the romance and it took too many years to get there. In fact it took an entire story to get there.

I am glad I got to read Andrew and Caleb’s story as I love to know all about the couples that are featured in the Home books, but I need more romance than bromance in the books I read.  Although these two have a lot of hot sex they have to work very hard to get their hearts involved.
