Lies are the chains that keep you weighed down at rock bottom.
Officer Noel Carlson isn’t out to anyone in small-town Stratton, Pennsylvania, only to distant friends and family, so a relationship is out of the question. That doesn’t stop him from wanting one, though.
When a night-shift call brings him face to thonged butt with a hired stripper whose girl-party gig went terribly wrong, Noel takes pity on the guy and lets him go. But he can’t get the encounter out of his mind.
Shane has big-time debts to repay, especially to the brother who sacrificed nearly everything for him. His two jobs, in a deli and as a stripper, leave him no time for a social life. But a non-date of hot sex and takeout food with Noel? He can squeeze that in.
The bond they form is stronger than either expected or wanted. Especially since the step Shane’s about to take to put his brother—and his soul—back in the black isn’t quite legal. And he never calculated just how much his determination to make things right will cost him in the end.
Warning: Following on from the Cost of Repairs series, this book contains a closeted cop who’s looking for love, an indebted stripper who doesn’t believe he’s worthy, and a tasteful abundance of dirty guy sex. Also contains references to past physical abuse some readers may find disturbing.
When hunky cop Noel Carson meets part time stripper Shane when his routine gets taken too far he couldn’t possibly have known how his life would change. Noel isn’t out in the small town he lives in or to any of his work colleagues and he carries nightmares and fear of an attack that left him and his best friend Tristan injured. Shane is out and proud but so haunted and beaten down by his past that it’s often a struggle to just get through the day.
This is a sombre and often bleak story about how past events have affected both Shane and Noel. Shane has the weight of the world on his shoulders and he and his brother Jason have fought hard to just keep their heads above water. The brothers mean everything to each other, their past giving them a unique bond as brothers, but the debt, lies and consequences are beginning to become too much.
Noel’s life changed forever one night when he was brutally attacked with his best friend. His scars are far more than the physical and the outcome for Tristan was far graver. He feels a huge sense of guilt over what happened and he is still a fantastic friend to Tristan three years on.
Neither of these imperfect men was or is looking for a relationship but once they get together there is no stopping them. When things are fine the sex is hot and there is a lot of laughter. When things are not fine the memories become too overwhelming and there are dark thoughts and anger. Initially they spend more time apart than together but both seem drawn to the other even as the lies threaten to ruin everything.
Shane is dealt yet another blow when his brother becomes ill and takes on paying back their debts as a personal crusade. The way he chooses to do it will not please anyone and becomes yet another secret to weigh him down.
Just when you are given a little optimism another tragedy strikes, one that took me by surprise and shook me and left me balling into tissues.
This story had some great secondary characters and I hope we get to see Tristan with his own story soon.
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
