Coffee. Black liquid fuel. Life in a cup. How I adore you.

One of the common factors in the majority of my fiction is coffee. There’s always coffee, even in my fantasy worlds. Silas and Rhys exchange quips about coffee in Close Quarter. Michael buys Sam a good cup in Takeover. In Just Business? When we first meet Justin, he’s a barista in a coffee shop. He takes that job seriously, too.

I…might be a little obsessed with coffee. Which is a bit odd, considering that I didn’t actually start drinking it until I was twenty-two years old. Yes, I was legally drinking alcohol before I started my coffee habit.

In fact, I had graduated from college. Looking back, I kind of regret not being a caffeine fiend in college. Probably would have helped. (I was never into soda, so I didn’t develop a Coca-Cola habit.)

So how did my love of coffee happen? Well, back after graduation, I worked for the university for a short time, along with my roommate. And we worked for a really horrible, abusive boss. So abusive that the moment we could leave for lunch, we did, even though we brought our lunches. So we’d walk down into the Oakland section of Pittsburgh and eat and talk and usually wind up at a coffee shop called Arabica.

One of those times, my roommate prodded me into trying a mocha, on her. And with a good amount of sugar, it was…tasty. Really quite tasty. And man did I feel so energetic!

Yup. The first one was free.

Soon, I was buying my own. And adding less sugar. And then none and then getting lattes and then cappuccinos and then drinking drip with cream… and really enjoying the hell out of coffee. From the smell to the warmth when I wrapped my hands around the mug to the clink of china.

Oh yeah, I was hooked. Still am.

And yes, my dear friend and former roommate takes great pride in being my gateway to the elixir of… err… to coffee. And I raise my cup to her!

  1. Miss Anna Zabo, I would apologize for getting you addicted to coffee but you’d know I wansn’t sincere. Thank you for the awesome shout out. Whenever I read a book of yours and come across a coffee mention, I think of those walks to Oakland. So happy to still be your friend after all these years.

  2. Heh, I hadn’t realized you didn’t pick up the habit till after college. I do remember Bad Boss, sigh. We were so young and stupid back then, but at least you found a life-long love out of it! And you live near a wonderful coffeeshop now, too!

Hope this one sells even better than the last 🙂
