Life isn’t always fair, and that’s something that Llewellyn Gardner knows about first hand. His life was on the fast track until one night of extreme passion changed everything. Now eight years later, he’s still living with the aftershocks of that night. Everywhere he turns or runs, there’s another reminder. What the hell do you do when you try to drown your demons only to find out they can swim?
Shane Smith, Jr. owner of Smith Construction, could see the emotional turmoil within his new employee — it’s why he hired him. There was something about the gorgeous, misunderstood man with the overly expressive eyes that came to their small town with a past no one was willing to overlook. Shane could see the good in Llewellyn, and those eyes of his were a clear window to his soul. Shane wasn’t going to let the man live a future of solitude because his past had been plagued with deceit.
Llewellyn wasn’t sure what to think about Shane. After years of protecting himself from being tricked twice, he was now faced with worry again. What would happen to him if Shane didn’t believe his truth, and walked away? Llewellyn wasn’t sure he’d be able to survive being left alone. Again.

What a rollercoaster!
Llewellyn. LLew. This story will make your heart break for Llew.
If there was ever a character at the beginning of a story that I wanted to shout at, to plead with to change his plans, it was Llewellyn Gardner. So young, so vibrant and with his whole life in front of him. So in love with his best friend, so sure of what he wants in his future yet living with a little doubt over how Moss, his boyfriend, truly feels. One awful night that sees these two young men left in very different places, dealing with very different demons and sees Llewellyn left broken.
Eight years later and although Llew may not be as fragile, desperate and broken as he was he certainly isn’t the fun loving 18 year old he was before that night. He is very much still broken but he now has coping mechanisms and every so often just a tiny bit of hope. Even now people won’t listen or give him a chance and he finds himself in a strange town living with the dread of the people about him finding out about his past and treating him like an animal. He is lucky enough to find two people that offer him a chance, one of them is Shane Smith.
Where Llew’s story was built over time and his character is etched into our hearts and minds we don’t know too much about Shane except that he is kind and compassionate and willing to offer Llew a chance. He sees something in the man that his gut tells him is good and he follows his instincts and ends up being just what Llew needs.
AE Via gave us a book full of great characters in Defined by Deceit. Thank god for Ace and the fact that he himself was in love and able to offer the young Llew some protection. The councillor for sticking to his guns and forcing Llew to talk and for the advice that helped him so much later in his life as it wound its way through his mind like a survival mantra. His brother Leslie who had already lost so much with Llew but who always had his back and felt his pain just as much as he did.
This is a story about love and loss. It reminds us how the actions of one person can change the course of more than just their life. It will bring out all sorts of emotions in you but the epilogue will leave you smiling.
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
