Dreamspinner Workshop and Harry Potter
This past weekend I headed down to Orlando for the Dreampinner Press Author Workshop. I’ve heard so many amazing things about their workshop, and I was excited to be able to attend. Dreamspinner Press was the first publisher I ever signed with, and I’ve always been a huge fan of them.
Despite nearly having a panic attack due to flight delays, it turned out to be one of the best weekends ever for me. Not only did I get to visit sunny Florida and the Harry Potter theme parks, but I got to spend the entire trip with some of my favorite people.
I usually only get to see most of my author friends once a year at GRL. With JP Barnaby and I opting to skip GRL in favor of a Caribbean cruise this year, I was worried I wouldn’t get to see anyone. But though I didn’t get to see everyone that I see at GRL, I did get to spend a lot of time with some of my best writing friends.
JP and I got to the hotel around two in the morning on Friday, which had us pretty exhausted when everything start at eight! But despite being tired, I really enjoyed all of the different panels on Friday and Saturday. I reconnected with old friends and even met some new ones.
Sunday morning was the teary good bye for most people. After the goodbye breakfast, JP and I were picked up at the hotel by Dire Callahan and his boy for a whirlwind day at Universal Studios. We rode almost every single ride there, stopping one or twice for a break to keep JP from puking in colors.
That night, while JP crashed from exhaustion, I headed down to the pool for a bit of work. As much fun as it is working from home, working poolside in Orlando blows it out of the water. So with music playing, kids splashing in the pool, and my laptop fully charged, I managed to get a good bit of writing done before heading back up to the room to finally sleep.
We woke up on Monday morning and did the whole thing over again, this time with Rowan Speedwell joining us! We’d decided not to take any bags into the parks so we wouldn’t have to keep getting a locker. That didn’t work out too well. By the time we left, we had two drawstring bags stuffed to the brim and two or three shopping bags.
Hey, it’s Harry Potter. How can you say no?
Overall, it was a fantastic weekend. Nothing gets you fired up like inspirational panels from some of the best authors in the genre. And nothing helps you relax and calm down like chatting with some of my closest friends
I can’t wait to see everyone again! Hopefully I won’t have to wait a full year!
And if there’s one thing I learned, it never hurts to be a #dreamer!
