Little Boy Lost: Book One
Little Boy Lost is the story of Brian McAllister, the boy next door.
Brian goes to school, does his homework, and helps his foster parents around the house. Brian also has a secret: he is in love with his best friend, Jamie. But in Crayford, Alabama, being in love with another boy is the worst kind of sin.
Brian and Jamie will discover just how deep their emotional bond runs, and at what cost. What will they do if their secret is discovered? From fumbling through their first sexual experiences to hiding all aspects of their relationship from everyone in their lives, Brian and Jamie battle for the one thing that is truly theirs—love.
First Edition published by Dreamspinner Press, March 2011
Brian McAllister is a somewhat typical high school kid. If it weren’t for his close friendship with the high school golden boy and his foster kid status, he would probably go through high school mostly unnoticed. Of course there is that whole gay thing and abomination thing, in love with his best friend thing… oh and the fact that his feelings can never ever see the light of day. Of course that best friend, Jamie Mayfield is in a similar position, except he has the ultra-religious fire and brimstone mother and golden boy status.
On its surface, Enlightened by JP Barnaby sounds like a pretty typical gay kid coming of age in The South story. But this is JP Barnaby, nothing is ever simple. Her boys never get a fair shake. He boys have to work for their happy. That work starts in Enlightened as Jamie and Brian have to decide how to balance appearances, expectations, love, and lust. Together, they have to appease Jamie’s parents. Brian has to decide how much he can risk with his foster parents. He is already a throwaway. He is already without family.
If you have read the blurbs for the rest of the series, you know that in the end, despite all their best efforts and their love for each other, Brian is broken and Jamie gone.
Enlightened is the first book in Barnaby’s groundbreaking Little Boy Lost series. I first read it about two years ago but was unable to continue the series at the time. Part of it was that I was already a little broken by the end of enlightened. Part of it was simply time. Since then the author has assured me that Brian and Jamie will, eventually, get their happy, so I will persevere.
