What happens when friendship catches fire?

Former Marine and lower-leg amputee Carey Everett keeps a grueling schedule of counseling fellow war veterans and their families. The injury he received in Afghanistan forces him to rely on a reserve of strength he didn’t even know he had. A much deserved vacation will let him reconnect with his best friend, who saved his life and has been there for him through devastating injury and painful recovery.

Part-time EMT and aspiring singer Jase DeSantis has been in love with Carey for years, but he’s come to accept that his straight friend will never be able to offer more. Jase fills his days with band rehearsals, ambulance shifts, and willing groupies, all while trying to cope with debilitating PTSD.

A week of sun, fun, and music in San Diego changes Jase and Carey’s lives forever when their relationship takes an unexpected turn. Jase has been longing for that change, but it leaves Carey reeling with confusion. As Jase fights to hold things together, Carey deals with doubts, fears, and his own preconceived notions about labels and the true nature of love.

Caroline’sView:

My first book by Melanie Hansen and certainly won’t be my last.

This is the heart warming and often heart breaking story of two men who met in boot camp, served together, nearly died together and are like brothers now their time in the war zone is over.

Jase DeSantis was a medic whilst he served. From the moment he meets Carey it seems they are destined to become good friends. When Carey keeps a secret for him whilst they are still serving that friendship is cemented.

Carey hasn’t had an easy life but has a vibrancy about him until one day in Afghanistan when life as he knows it comes crashing down and he is left with devastating injuries. Jase is the medic on scene when Carey is injured and through his expertise and sheer will and determination Carey is still alive when he reaches the hospital although he has lost a leg in the explosion.

The story is told in flashbacks, both from the time leading up to the accident and Carey’s subsequent recovery to the present day. It is dark in places and pulls on your heartstrings as Carey battles with depression and almost loses the will to live.

The one constant through his recovery is Jase as friend, mentor and punch bag.
Ten years later and Jase is in a band that looks about to hit the big time. His life is full of shallow relationships with both men and women. As he has been in love with his best friend for years and knows it will never be reciprocated he has never bothered with the whole love and settling down thing. He is just about managing his PTSD and anxiety but really could do with some professional help to help him move forward.

Carey is busy with his work helping wounded vets and hasn’t yet found the right women. Some don’t like the hours he works, some don’t like his scars and what is left of his leg and he has become resigned to spending most of his free time alone.

When he visits Jase for a week his plan is to spend his time in the sun, mainly at the beach with his best friend and just relax. Jase is finding it more difficult to keep his feelings a secret and Carey suddenly has an awareness of his best friend that is new and terrifying.

This is not an easy love story and I did find myself getting annoyed with Carey at times. He came across as a bit whiny on occasion and it was hugely frustrating to watch him dither when Jase gave his everything and made himself so vulnerable.
