Title: Trust the Focus
Author: Megan Erickson
Cover Artist: unknown
Genre/Sub-Genre: Contemporary, M/M Romance, New Adult
With his college graduation gown expertly pitched into the trash, Justin Akron is ready for the road trip he planned with his best friend Landry— and ready for one last summer of escape from his mother’s controlling grip. Climbing into the Winnebago his father left him, they set out across America in search of the sites his father had captured through the lens of his Nikon. As an aspiring photographer, Justin can think of no better way to honor his father’s memory than to scatter his ashes at the sites he held sacred. And there’s no one Justin would rather share the experience with more than Landry. But Justin knows he can’t escape forever. Eventually he’ll have to return home and join his mother’s Senate campaign. Nor can he escape the truth of who he is, and the fact that he’s in love with his out-and-proud travel companion. Admitting what he wants could hurt his mother’s conservative political career. But with every click of his shutter and every sprinkle of ash, Justin can’t resist Landry’s pull. And when the truth comes into focus, neither is prepared for the secrets the other is hiding.
Prism recently reviewed Trust the Focus. You can find the review here.
1. We are here today to talk about Trust the Focus. What can you tell us about it?
Trust the Focus is about two college graduates who take a road trip across the country to scatter the ashes of the main character’s father. Along the way, they both confront their feelings for each other.
2. Tell us more about Justin and Landry?
Justin’s father has passed away, and he’s let his mother run a lot of his life. He’s scared to admit he’s gay and he’s even more scared to admit that he’s in love with his best friend, Landry. He plans to join his mother’s conservative Senate campaign when this road trip is over, even though his first love is photography, just like his father.
Landry is out and proud, with tattoos and piercings. He’s a graphic artist and loves to draw. But he has secrets too.
3. What about Trust the Focus makes you proudest?
Justin and Landry’s relationship. I love their love. I believe their love. I fell for them as I was writing them.
4. Photography plays an integral part in the telling of this story. Is this a personal passion for you?
I love photography! I’ve taken classes in high school and college. I wouldn’t say I’m particularly great at it, even though I’d like to be.
5. How many of the locations in this story have you personally visited? Are you planning to visit the rest?
I visited the Portland Headlight in Maine, and there is a pivotal scene there in Trust the Focus.
5. Anything else you want to tell our readers about Trust the Focus?
This is definitely a coming-of-age story. Justin and Landry are twenty-two and they act impulsively and sometimes a little immaturely. I wanted this to be a realistic journey, no matter how hard it was to write, and how hard it might be to read.
6. If you could give one piece of advice to aspiring writers, what would it be?
Write. Write write write and don’t give up. Don’t worry about where the book will sell or how you’ll publish it. Just write. I wrote Trust the Focus before I had an agent or book deal. I wrote it because these characters wouldn’t stop talking to me.
7. Will we be seeing more from these characters in the future?
Yes! The companion novel to Trust the Focus is called Focus on Me and that will be out in July. Justin and Landry make a cameo!
8. What are you reading right now and what is next on your to-be-read list?
I’m on deadline right now, so I’m not reading anything, but next on my list is Nothing Like Paris by Amy Jo Cousins
9. Rapid Fire Time
- Ketchup or Mustard? Ketchup
- Disney or Nick? Nick
- Sweet or Savory? Savory
- Hamburger or Hotdog? Cheeseburger!
- roller skates or ice skates? Roller skates
- Comedy or Horror? Comedy
- Tropical island or snow covered mountain cabin? Tropical island
- Windows or Mac? Mac
- Dragon or Unicorn? Always be a unicorn if you can be.
- Tattoos or piercings? Tattoos!
10. What are you working on? What is next?
Right now, I’m working on copyedits for Focus on Me. And I’m drafting Dirty Talk, which is the second of my Mechanics of Love series out this summer with Avon.

Megan Erickson worked as a journalist covering real-life dramas before she decided she liked writing her own endings better and switched to fiction. She lives in Pennsylvania with her husband, two kids and two cats. When she’s not tapping away on her laptop, she’s probably listening to the characters in her head who won’t stop talking.
