This is book one in the Shifter Protection Specialists Inc. series.
Never play cat and mouse with a saber-tooth tiger.
When Kale Andrews gets disturbing mail from an obsessed fan, his brother drags him to Shifter Protection Specialists, Inc. Kale reluctantly agrees to have a bodyguard, but when a tall, muscular blond walks into the office emanating power and a sexy dose of danger, Kale’s doubts about needing the man with him twenty-four hours a day quickly disappear.
The easy babysitting job Aleksi was promised quickly changes from strange mail to threatening deliveries, so Aleksi has to become creative to keep his protectee out of danger. Everyone knows models are self-centered and shallow, so why does being with Kale make him feel like he finally has a home? Since he’s a saber-tooth tiger and naturally dominant, most people aren’t strong enough to be with him in a relationship or even as a friend. Yet Kale seems to calm his beast, simultaneously exciting the man in Aleksi.
Neither man expects nor wants a relationship with strings, but as they grow closer, Aleksi realizes that Kale might be his mate. With an obsessed fan escalating toward murder, Aleksi isn’t sure that even his tiger can keep his mate safe.
I am not entirely sure what drew me toward Purrfect Protector. However, after reading the blurb, it wouldn’t leave me alone. I hesitated to pick it up for a long time because my last experience with the author’s work was not positive. In all honesty, I have had a number of less than stellar encounters with the publisher’s work as a whole recently. However, the book just kept cropping up and telling me I needed to read it.
In the end, I am very glad that I gave this book a go. I will also be continuing the series. While some of the past issues did crop up, I was engrossed in the plot enough that I was able to ignore minor proofreading issues.
Let’s talk about that plot. We have a pretty typical bodyguard/client relationship going on here. There is a pretty fast a heavy fall from first blush to happily ever after. However, there is a bit of a twist. The bodyguard in question is a 6′ 10″ saber-tooth tiger shifter, and the client is a human model.
There are many aspects of this world that were attractive to me. First of all, while the Shifter Protection Specialists Inc bodyguards are known worldwide, they are also feared because shifters are feared. They face discrimination at every turn. They have to fight a battle on two fronts, both against their enemy and the authorities who would just assume let a human criminal go in favor of bagging a shifter. Which they do on more than one occasion. All this making their job that much harder.
There are no fated mates, but there is a mate bond… that they accidentally set in motion thanks to their lust. I like how the shifter/human mentality was handled. We got a peek into Aleksi’s consciousness as a tiger. I liked how the cat came to an independent decision to trust Kale. I thought the way the first meeting between Aleksi’s cat and Kale was handled was fairly authentic feeling. Well, authentic for the world created.
The baddy in Purrfect Protector is interesting. He lends himself to the story. He doesn’t feel contrived, as I have encountered all to often these days. He really is a crazy SOB, and I don’t think we have heard the last of him or his cronies.
I would like to have known more about Caleb and Kale’s relationship in this installment. There were times I felt like I was missing something, but I don’t think anything that was missing was essential to my enjoyment of the tale as a whole.
There are a number of secondary characters introduced in this story that I suspect we will be seeing as the series continues. I look forward to getting to know more about Caleb as well as the all of the SPSI guys. I think there may have been mention of a King Cobra shifter. That will be interesting.
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
