From the author of Make it Count comes the first novel in the In Focus series…
With his college graduation gown expertly pitched into the trash, Justin Akron is ready for the road trip he planned with his best friend Landry— and ready for one last summer of escape from his mother’s controlling grip. Climbing into the Winnebago his father left him, they set out across America in search of the sites his father had captured through the lens of his Nikon.
As an aspiring photographer, Justin can think of no better way to honor his father’s memory than to scatter his ashes at the sites he held sacred. And there’s no one Justin would rather share the experience with more than Landry.
But Justin knows he can’t escape forever. Eventually he’ll have to return home and join his mother’s Senate campaign. Nor can he escape the truth of who he is, and the fact that he’s in love with his out-and-proud travel companion.
Admitting what he wants could hurt his mother’s conservative political career. But with every click of his shutter and every sprinkle of ash, Justin can’t resist Landry’s pull. And when the truth comes into focus, neither is prepared for the secrets the other is hiding.
Friends-to-lovers, road trip, and photography? Yes, please. I couldn’t resist picking up this title by new-to-me author Megan Erickson.
You can’t help but love Justin and Landry. Justin is trying so hard to be what his politician mom wants and needs, to the detriment of his own wants and needs. Landry just wants to be there for Justin as he has always been. It is clear from page 1 that there is some serious chemistry between these two. The story is told in first person from Justin’s point of view, so we don’t know what is going through Landry’s head. We do, however, understand that Landry loves Justin just from observation. If only Justin was as clued into his best friend.
I love road trip stories. I don’t know why. Maybe it is the close quarters that force the main characters to confront their feelings. You can only run for so long when you are traveling the country in an RV with only a pull-out couch to sleep on. Confronting his feelings and fears is exactly what Justin has to do. Landry has some fears of his own that have to be obliterated.
Ober the course of one crazy summer they fight. They laugh and mourn. They come together and split apart. They grow up. They are not perfect. They don’t declare their undying love and ride off into the sunset. They have to deal with the realities of the changes in their status. It isn’t always pretty. Sometimes it is down-right heartbreaking. In the end, however, you just want the best for these two. I love that the best isn’t necessarily what everyone expects it to be.
I would like to thank the author for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
