Seven thousand meters below the ocean’s surface, the crew of the BathyTech 3 mineral mining facility has found something remarkable: a rock-like sphere of unknown material and origin.
For Mo Rees, the discovery calls to his inner explorer and adds color to his dull miner’s life. Even better than the promise of new knowledge is the unexpected connection he forges with Dr. Armin Savage-Hall, leader of the team brought down to study the thing.
For Armin, the object is the find of a lifetime. It could prove his controversial theories and secure his scientific reputation. And Mo is a fascinating bonus.
Then crew members start behaving strangely. Worse, they start to change: their eyes glow purple, their teeth sharpen. Then the violence begins, the brutal deaths. As BathyTech descends deeper into chaos, the surviving crew works desperately to find the cause of the horrors around them. What they uncover could annihilate the human race. And they can’t stop it.
Setting as character:
Hi y’all! I’m Ally Blue. I’d like to thank Prism Book Alliance for hosting me today as part of my blog tour for my first full-length horror novel, Down. I’m so excited to finally have this book released to the world, and I’m thrilled to be here today!
Down is set roughly one hundred years in the future, at the bottom of the Peru-Chile Trench. That’s around seven or eight thousand meters under the ocean’s surface (very roughly, twenty-three to twenty-six thousand feet, for my fellow Americans). Thus the name, ha. The deepest ocean has always fascinated me. One of the articles I read for research on this book opened with a quote saying in part, “More people have traveled into space than have traveled to the deep ocean realm.” (Credited to The Blue Planet: Seas of Life). That is staggering, when you think about it—the majority of our very own home planet is ocean, and so much of that is still unexplored. Truly a frontier.
In Down, the depths of the ocean have been conquered, to some extent. BathyTech, the corporation at the heart of the book, mines minerals from the deep sea vents. That’s why our intrepid crew is in the trench in the first place. But even though it’s familiar to them, I wanted to capture the wonder, awe, and fear I imagine my point-of-view characters would still feel when they look out into that endless black water, see the strange creatures that live there, and recognize how fragile a human life is in that environment. I wanted them to sense the weight of the sea—literally miles of it—crushing them down when they left the protected environment of the BathyTech pod. I wanted them to feel the emptiness around them, the coldness, the utter lack of light. I wanted them to know darkness as something solid and real.
In other words, I wanted the environment to become a character in and of itself. A sinister character, lurking in the background. Not actively hurting anyone, but presenting a threat all the same. I think it turned out well. I hope you’ll pick up the book and judge for yourself!
About the Author:
Ally Blue is acknowledged by the world at large (or at least by her heroes, who tend to suffer a lot) as the Popess of Gay Angst.
She has a great big suggestively-shaped hat and rides in a bullet-proof Plexiglas bubble in Christmas parades. Her harem of manwhores does double duty as bodyguards and inspirational entertainment. Her favorite band is Radiohead, her favorite color is lime green and her favorite way to waste a perfectly good Saturday is to watch all three extended version LOTR movies in a row.
Her ultimate dream is to one day ditch the evil day job and support the family on manlove alone. She is not a hippie or a brain surgeon, no matter what her kids’ friends say.
