Deep Blues Goodbye (Altered States #1) by Laura Harner & T.A. Webb ~ Book Review by PizzyGirl

In my preparations for reading this years Pulp Friction series, I have decided to read the Altered States series. These 4 books set the world for PF2015 and I felt to enjoy the serial to its fullest, I needed to read these books first. What I got was a great series that I fully intend to continue reading even without PF2015!

Deep Blues Goodbye Title: Deep Blues Goodbye (Altered States #1)

Author: Laura Harner & T.A. Webb

Publisher: Hot Corner Press

Cover Artist: Laura Harner

Rating: 4.5 of 5 Stars

The world might not have been ready for vampires when NOPD Detective Travis Boudreaux had the bad taste to sit up at his own funeral, but two years later, the new cause célèbre is civil rights for preternatural beings and most humans are on the bandwagon. Except whoever is killing vampires and wannabes.

Detective Sam Garrett hates all things preternatural. Having your undead partner try to make you his first meal will do that to a guy. One final screw-up gets Sam banished to the Paranormal Criminal Investigations Unit—the Odd Squad—under the oversight of Detective Danny Burkette.

Now it’s up to Burkette to work with Garrett by day and Boudreaux by night as they follow a trail of clues that leads from the historic cemeteries of New Orleans to the bayous of southern Louisiana. Under the all-too-interested gaze of a Master vampire and the local werewolf pack Alpha, they discover some lessons in life—and death—take longer to learn…and not all second chances are created equal.

Warning: In this series the vampires don’t sparkle, werewolves kill, and sometimes the men have sex. With each other.

PizzyGirl’s View:

Deep Blues Goodbye starts out by giving us a glimpse of the events at the end of the last story and then picks back up two years after the world is introduced to the paranormal in the series prequel. Right away the reader is introduced to the ways in which the world has changed. This is a rich world and very well developed. Supernaturals or “Supers”  are “out of the closet” so to speak and the New Orleans Police Department has created a Paranormal Criminal Investigations Unit to handle all things “Odd.” The government has amended the Civil Rights Act and created a Universal Bill of Rights to provide protections to all paranormal beings. The vampires and werewolves have hierarchies and set behavioral patterns. Just like any other world, there are the good and the bad.

This book also has good murder mystery that helps to move the plot along while at the same time revealing information about the supernaturals. It also serves to dig up information to fill in the gaps in Travis’s life, introduces new characters, and sets things up for the series to continue. The authors did a good job of only giving out small tidbits at a time to keep the suspense and confusion high. I like not being about to figure out motivations on my own. I like when things are not perfectly predictable with me not not knowing everything until the authors are ready for me to know it. Once again, this is a shock them and leave them hanging kind of ending that is not my favorite, but I was expecting it this time.

Please be warned, this is not your typical story with two main characters. There are several main characters all with histories, personalities, and purposes. Sam is still struggling to get over his former partner being turned and bitter over being attacked. He hates all things paranormal but is forced to work on the Odd Squad. Travis is struggling to come to terms with his undead status. He didn’t ask to be turned and even two years later, resents his new status. He is especially bitter over being forced to retire and has no “Sire” to train him in the vampire ways. Danny is a detective on the Odd Squad and is wildcard added into the mix. He is the link that brings Sam and Travis back together. He works with and has had a previous sexual relationship with Sam. He is also working with Travis temporarily and is instantly in lust with the vampire but struggles to understand why. Russ is the werewolf alpha who has been asked to look after Sam. Jamal aka Jet Black is his Beta and lover who was wrongfully turned during an attack on his father. Finally, there are the baddies, Henri and the various vamps out to get to Travis and Sam and the miscellaneous supporting characters who have the potential to show up again later.

While Sam and Travis were the main couple in the prequel, they are not in this book. Well not exclusively. There is still the attraction and the longing between the two men. But there is also a history between Danny and Sam that manifests as a sexual encounter in a time of mutual need. Then there is the Travis and Danny dynamic that flared up and had the potential to be HOT. Finally, Sam attracts the attention of Russ and Jet, and boy was that smoking hot! Honestly, I can’t tell you how I want things to turn out. The authors plead a great case for any combination and I could feel the pull towards each couple as I was reading about them on the page. I am not usually a big fan of love triangles (pentagons?) or sharing partners, but in this case, Sam and Travis were never really an established couple so it is easier to handle. And I am interested to see how this all plays out. Who will end up together in the end? or at all?

Please note that this book is not a stand alone. It is also not a complete tale in and of itself. It is part of a series and the plot, characterization, and romance pentagon will continue on in the next book. If you are looking for a traditional romance, this is not it. If you are looking for a bunch of hot and horny men trying to navigate a new world in a multidimensional series, give this one a shot.
