HORN GATE: Open at your own risk.
Librarian Isaac Stein spends his lumpy, lonely days restoring forgotten books, until the night he steals an invitation to a scandalous club steeped in sin. Descending into its bowels, he accidentally discovers Scratch, a wounded demon who feeds on lust.
Consorting with a mortal is a bad idea, but Scratch can’t resist the man who knows how to open the portal that will free him and his kind. After centuries of possessing mortals, he finds himself longing to surrender.
To be together, Isaac and Scratch must flirt with damnation and escape an inhuman trafficking ring—and they have to open their hearts or they will never unlock the Horn Gate.
My View – Story:
Wow, this story was fascinating! I love a good trip into demonology so this story was right up my alley. The world this author created was fantastic and full of potential. This story was short so the author has just touched on concepts but did so in a way that captured my interest and has me begging for more! I want more information about Isaac and Scratch. I want more information about the demons and angels and the idea that they are neither good nor bad in and of themselves. I want more information about the Judge and his purpose. I just want more!
The tone of this story was also fabulous. The tension jumped out from my speakers. The tension while Isaac explored the unknown, the sexual tension between Isaac and Scratch, the tension between Isaac and the Judge over the mysterious manuscript, the tension as the demonology unfolded and Isaac discovered a whole new world, the tension while Isaac convinced Scratch to take him on the journey to find the other enslaved incubi.
I don’t have enough words to tell you how much I enjoyed this series opener. From just this one short novella, I am fully enraptured and fully invested. I am more than eager to know what comes next! There are so many questions left unanswered and so many promises left unfulfilled. But instead of leaving me pissed or leaving me feeling like this work was unfinished, the writing and the world were just so well done that I want more installments as fast as possible. I can see the potential of this series and know that one short novella will never be enough to capture all the possibilities. This series needs more books to be fully fleshed out and I need those books ASAP!
My View – Narration:
This is not my first experience with Charlie David, but it is one of this best readings I have encountered so far. He really performed this novella spectacularly. The voices were amazing and the way he brought forth the emotions and the overall tension was fantastic. Wonderful narration!
