Casey’s a hotshot bartender in Chicago, but that doesn’t mean he’s not sensitive. Though uncharacteristic, Casey lets a big, charismatic Tennessee bear named Mike seduce him. Who can explain the laws of attraction? No matter, Casey’s hooked, and he knows what he wants. Unfortunately, Mike’s only in town for the weekend. But then, Casey and Mike’s shot at something more is interrupted by Casey’s brother’s death.
Casey sets out to accomplish making his brother’s dream come true, but that means quitting his job and moving to Tennessee. Months later, while still trying to cope with his loss, he runs into Mike, who’s running a bar he’s inherited from his father, and he happens to be looking for a new bartender. Casey and Mike reconnect, but the ghosts of their loved ones might ruin their chance for love.
I love trying new authors. The thing about new-to-me authors is they are hit and miss. Unfortunately, Kindred Spirits by Alicia Dyal was a complete miss for me.
Technically there aren’t any glaring errors. It was in a trope I general devoir, second-chance romance. It involved a main character that is not your general idea of a “perfect Adonis.” However, the entire thing fell flat for me. I didn’t get to know either main character well enough to feel for them or care about them.
I liked the message of living for yourself instead your family. I also appreciated that, despite being set in Tennessee, the story wasn’t centered around homophobia or small-town backlash.
Overall Kindred Spirits is the beginnings of sweet love story. It is basically sex free. There is nothing offensive about either character, and there is no baddy trying to undermine the relationship. Both characters are mature in their actions and decisions. It is a story of two men who were apparently destined to meet and who need each other.
I think this story will find an audience. I am not exactly sure who that audience will be, however.
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
