I am a big fan of Missy Welsh. Her story, My Summer of Wes, is one of my all-time favorite M/M Romances. Over the years I have made a point to try to read everything that she publishes. KLT23 is a steamy, short story with a sci-fi twist. This is the second release of the book, and I have to say I love the new cover and added epilogue!

KLT23 has been genetically engineered to be the perfect man and perfect soldier. He is a secret government agency’s ultimate success story with his strength, stamina, and intelligence. KLT23 has been exceeding expectations from the very beginning…until he developed an illness his doctors can’t identify, let alone cure. If they don’t do something soon, KLT23 will die.
Sergeant Horatio Muir only knows about KLT23 what he’s seen from his observation area and the few words they’ve exchanged when he brings the super soldier his meals. But that hasn’t stopped Muir from developing a soft spot for the innocent man he watches every day. That KLT23’s illness might kill him plagues Muir…until one of the doctors comes up with the theory that KLT23 needs to get laid to release the chemicals necessary to rebalance his system.
Fuck or die? Pass the lube.
(This is a 2nd edition that includes new content.)
One of the things that I really enjoy about Missy Welsh’s writing is her ability to permeate her stories with humor and love, even if they are only 37 pages. I read romance because I like to read love stories, and even if they are sex-filled smutfests, I still want love in the pages.
This little gem is less than 40 pages, but there is enough story there to make it interesting and feel invested in the characters. I found Horatio and Kelty to be both likable and sexy, and that’s a winning combination.
The story is based on the idea that we can create sentient life. The crazy thing about this short is that it could be a 300 page story, if you filled in all the details by building up a world where a laboratory grown super soldier with a heart is created. I would totally read that book too, but this one is just a snippet that pulls a few threads from a big idea, and sews them up nicely as a steamy short story. So, if you have a few minutes (because it won’t take you long to read it) and you enjoy science fiction with an M/M twist, this one is worth it because it’s well constructed and very fun to read.
I would like to thank the author for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
