Author: Morticia Knight
Publisher: Totally Bound
Genre/Sub-Genre: Contemporary, Erotica, M/M Romance
Never judge a sexy man by his cover.
Detective Beau Williams is hard-working, dedicated, and professional. He enjoys the finer things in life, but with his heavy caseload that includes what Beau suspects is a new serial killer, he has no time to enjoy much of anything. What the tall redhead needs is someone to shake him up a little.
Investigative Technician Austin Kent never met a snarky joke he didn’t like – or a set of stairs that couldn’t trip him up. One night after a devastating episode at work, Austin sees something else he likes – the handsome detective he’s seen around the station whom he’s always wondered about. But after he makes a drunken fool of himself in front of Detective Williams, he’s sure there’s no hope.
Beau and Austin’s worlds collide right away when Austin is sent to pick up some evidence at the station. Amidst a myriad of twists and turns in the troubling serial killer style murders of Vegas conventioneers, Austin and Beau discover that there’s more to the other than they’d originally thought. There might even be more they’d like to give – unless the killer has the final say.
“Beau, I’ve got an IT from Mercer’s office to see you, uh, from the Major Violater’s Unit.”
“Give me two minutes then send Simonson in.”
“It’s not Simonson—it’s that other guy who comes in here once in a while.”
Beau straightened in his seat. Could it be…?
“Yeah, okay Marty. Two minutes.”
He disconnected the line. He’d been tempted to ask the front desk officer the name of the IT, but in his head he imagined Austin standing there, big brown eyes staring at Marty, hearing Beau inquire.
His desk phone buzzed again.
“Need you in the Conventioneer Killer’s Task Force room right away.”
Lieutenant Campos’ voice had sounded even more irritated than usual. The stress was getting to all of them—particularly since the murders had officially been labeled as the work of a serial killer. He glanced up at the clock on the wall of his office. The small arm pointed at four and the longer one had almost made it to the end of the hour. It had been nearly twelve hours since he’d left his home that morning to view the grisly scene of the latest killings. A lot had happened since then.
He had one foot out his office door when he spotted Austin advancing toward him past the crowded desks of the many officers in the main area. The puppy dog stare had transformed into a defeated hound dog look—Beau wouldn’t have been too surprised to see a tail tucked between his legs. Something tugged in his chest. He was sure it had to be difficult for Austin to see him so soon after the previous night’s debacle, especially since Beau surmised that Austin was suffering from a recent heartbreak. Beau wouldn’t make the situation more awkward for him by referring to it.
Beau extended his hand, hoping his smile came off as warm. Austin stared at it for a moment before grasping it. Beau added a squeeze as if in reassurance, then let go. It seemed to take an additional moment for Austin to lower his arm.
Austin cleared his throat. “Hey. Nice to see…uh. Yeah. So…” Austin let out a shaky laugh, rubbing the back of his neck.
Beau noticed the new bandage on Austin’s arm. “Your elbow feeling better?”
“Oh, yeah. Tons better. Thanks.”
Beau had to chuckle. “You certainly did a much better job on it than I did.”
Austin snorted. “Lots of practice.”
Beau grinned at him. “Do you mind following me? I’m afraid my presence was requested right when Marty let me know you were here. You can tell me what you need on the way then I can probably get someone to help you.”
“Sure.” Austin fell in step slightly behind him since there wasn’t much room in the aisle way to walk abreast. “So, I need the blood work on the Langford homicide from last week—suspect’s being indicted tomorrow—and just before I left the office, I was told there’d been an arrest in one of your conventioneer killings…”
Beau came to an abrupt halt and Austin plowed into him with an ‘oomph’.
“Sorry.” Austin’s tone came off as aghast. “You must think I’m the biggest klutz ever. Not that that isn’t accurate, I have a tendency…”
Beau’s heart beat high in his chest. “What did you say?”
“That I’m a big klutz.”
“No. About the conventioneer killings.”
“Oh! Well Mercer told me that there’d been an arrest.”
“That’s impossible. I’m pretty sure I would’ve noticed such a thing, since I would’ve been the one doing the arresting.”
“Uh…” Austin gave a sheepish smile accompanied by a shrug.
