Andreas Nikandros has one focus, to kill the vampire he believes murdered his sister, and he knows with their greater strength, the surest way to kill a vampire is to become one. As a zoologist, he’s used to looking at the world from a natural standpoint, but when he sets out on a quest to find a vampire to Turn him, what he finds in Titus Antonius Calidus is the last thing he expected. Titus has lived for over a thousand years, and in all that time has only ever given his heart to one man. As they follow their natural instincts, they discover something truly worth living forever for, each other.
Andreas sets out to kill his sister’s killer. Only, this killer is a vampire and Andreas is clearly out matched. He only survives through the intervention of another vampire, Titus. Andreas sees his chance and bargains to be made vampire himself so that he will have the strength needed to come back and kill his sister’s murderer. Andreas and Titus are drawn to each other for more than just the obvious attraction, so Titus agrees to turn Andreas only after Andreas spends a month with him learning what it means to be a vampire.
Of course, this is just a clever plot device to get these two men together so that they and their relationship can develop. We all know what will happen, it is very obvious, but it was still a really solid read. The world was fantastic and the writing drew me in and kept my attention. I enjoyed learning about these particular vampires, their culture, their social structure, their ways of life. I love that each new vampire world has similarities, but I really enjoy the differences, and this one has rules all its own.
The author brought forth some great characters. Titus has a rich history and many centuries of hurts and prejudices to overcome. Andreas is a genuinely good person. He awakens desires Titus long thought forgotten and together they not only made a HOT pair, but they made a great couple. Their love was a slow and steady development that was just as often sweet as it was intense and sexy. They fit together perfectly.
However, not everything was slow and steady and loving. There was a bit of action towards the end with the rebellion and a twist from the baddie I honestly didn’t see coming. The suspense was well done and for a bit, I wondered who all would make it out OK. It broke up the almost sugary sweetness and gave this a bit of drama to even things out.
As far as secondary characters go, Daniel was great. He has his own history and feeling to deal with. Sometimes I hated him, but mostly I felt sorry for him and could feel his hurt. While he could have gone either way, in the end, he came across as a good guy and I cannot help but want him to have his own HEA. Ryunosuke also stole my heart a bit with his obvious unrequited love. I can’t wait for his story.
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
