I have had the first edition of Nowhere Ranch on my Kindle for ages but just couldn’t get around to reading it. When I saw the second edition up for review, I grabbed the opportunity. I’m so glad I did!

Love will grow through the cracks you leave open.
Ranch hand Roe Davis absolutely never mixes business with pleasure—until he runs into his boss, Travis Loving, at the only gay bar within two hundred miles.
Getting involved with the ranch owner is a bad idea, but Roe’s and Travis’s bedroom kinks line up against one another like a pair of custom-cut rails. As long as they’re both clear this is sex on the side, no relationship, no interfering with the job, they could make it work.
Shut out by his family years ago, Roe survived by steadfastly refusing to settle into so much as a post office box. As his affair with Travis grows into more than just sex, Roe’s past catches up with him, threatening the thin ray of happiness he’s found, reminding him it’s well past time he went on his way.
But even a loner gets lonely, and at this point, there’s nowhere left to run. The shame and sorrow of what he’s lost will stay with Roe wherever he goes—until he’s ready to let love lead him home.
This novel has been previously published and has been revised from its original release.
This is going to be one of those fangirl reviews. Gushing, unapologetic, and completely off the cuff. I won’t even take time away from the gushing to write a blurb. I just want to spew my love for this book all over the page.
Let’s talk about characters first. Roe and Travis…Holy Crap on a cracker! Throughout the entire book I remained in awe of Ms. Cullinan’s ability to leave no doubt whatsoever about Travis’s feelings and desire to have Roe in his life. Even though the story is told from Roes’ first person perspective, Travis exudes sexual tension, passion, and emotion in even the subtlest and sparest of words. A line early on in the story just about did me in:
“I was serious about wanting it rough. You all right with the occasional swat on your backside?”
Ok, just mop me up off the floor when you have a minute, will you?
Not only does Travis spill sex appeal everywhere, but Roe is just as yummy. He reveals small, significant bits of himself and his painful past to the reader as the story progresses, letting out his line nice and slow, then letting the hook set before snagging the reader’s heart and never letting it go. I adored both of these men beyond description, and their chemistry and passion on the page is enough to melt the Kindle.
Speaking of melting the reading device, the scenes these two share are to die for. The BDSM comes in just the right doses and with a perfect intensity that pushes just the right buttons–all of them–and had me squirming under the drape at the salon, folks. I kid you not. Yet it isn’t just the sex. It’s everything, from Travis’s sincere concern for Roe’s welfare to Roe’s struggle to trust and allow Travis to help him heal. Wow. Just…Wow.
So what about the writing style? Let me tell you, Heidi Cullinan expertly weaves the pain of young man’s past and his present struggles and desires into a unique, authentic voice that tugs at the heartstrings. Pure, simple, and emotional, the reader not only knows exactly what is going on in Roe’s head, but feels what is tormenting his soul. This clear, conversational, and uncomplicated style is truly Roe, a character who is grappling with demons and self-loathing. Reading this narrative feels like sitting down with this incredible character and listening to him tell his beautiful story, from beginning to end.
Did I love this book? Oh, yes, for so many reasons. Mainly, though, I loved it because it is the perfect example of how a master storyteller can hold a reader in the palm of her hand and keep them captive through the simple honesty of her characters and the integrity of their bond (no pun intended).
