Sitcom sensation Felix Medrano, America’s Sweetheart, throws a star-studded surprise party for his sweetheart, beanpole barkeep Grover Shepherd.

It’s a smash, save for one detail: Shep is a no-show.

Who’d have thought it would be so hard to pop the question?

Lirtle’s View:

Ha! Great opening paragraph. That’s how you grab a reader.

I adore the rhythm and attitude in this writing, energetic and funny, while remaining grounded. Within the first few pages, I already had a good idea about Felix and Shep, as well as the so-called supporting characters. You’ll see what I mean when you read this. Yep, I said ‘when’ and that’s what I meant.

”We’re at Pride, right? In Atlanta? Big ol’ country-lookin’ boy comes up to me, says, ‘You know what my shirt’s made of?’ I go, ‘What?’ He goes, ‘Boyfriend material.’ “

Feliz laughed. “He musta been fine.”

“You wanna know how find he was?”

“How fine was he?”

“He wasn’t even wearing a shirt, and I let him get away with that line.”

“What a pushover!”

Shep laughed with a shrug: Guilty.

Ha! Y’all need to read this story to find out the why, where, and how of the setting, circumstances, and funny of this exchange, and the much more that lies beyond it.

Life happens, you have crazy friends – the type who seem to always drag you into unexpected hilarity – and you hope you can still make it home on time. Most of all, you hope to make it in time to share that life with the person who still texts you in ancient text-style speak, who knows when you only want another sip of that whiskey, who knows when you need to hear what they want to say about you, about being together.

What a fantastically written story, excellent characterization, and a prime, hilarious, sexy example of how fabulous a short story can be.

You betcha, I recommend this! And I would read more by this author.

  1. LOL So you’re one of those, Ulysses. 😀
This one definitely tickled my funny bone, and this was a new to me author, too.
I’ll be currrrrrious to see how you feel about it, and the shortness. 😉
