An absolute shifter winner from Annabelle Jacobs!

Twenty years ago the UK’s water supply was contaminated with an experimental pathogen, Lycanaeris, causing widespread panic across the nation. Terrorism was suspected but never proven, and when nothing happened–no epidemic, no unexplained illnesses–the whole episode was written off as an elaborate hoax. But Lycanaeris was selective. Only those of a certain age, and with a specific gene in their DNA were infected. Time would reveal the pathogen’s true nature, when those susceptible grew up Altered.
Daniel is one of thousands forced to hide his altered status by living a quiet life. He’s not like the others, though. Daniel can’t help looking so distinctive or being able to see every altered for what they really are. To those abducting altereds, that skill makes him valuable.
For Jordan, shifting from human to wolf means living under the radar to avoid unwanted attention. Meeting Daniel complicates matters. Daniel’s existence is a threat to Jordan and his friends, but Jordan can’t seem to shake the strange connection between them. When danger threatens, there’s little time for Daniel and Jordan to work out their feelings before lives are at stake.
I love this novel from Annabelle Jacobs. I immediately wanted more when I finished, and was so pleased when I saw that a sequel is on its way. This story has everything that keeps me hooked to a read. We have two interesting and complicated MCs in the form of Jordan a ‘full shifter’, and Daniel a ‘seer’. Both were changed / altered along with many others when a pathogen was released into the UK’s water system in the 1990’s. So, we have a mystery and crime as well as many questions. The pathogen is wanted by some to create perfect soldiers, as it can change humans to be full wolf shifters, or in others part shifters maybe fangs, claws, maybe both. Daniel was changed to be a ‘seer’ someone altered, so that they can see the ‘wolf within’ in the other altered. Unlike the others he doesn’t have the ability to sniff out other shifter’s, and although better than human, his other senses are not particularly heightened. I noticed one review complained that Daniel had to be told when ‘altereds’ were around -why when he was a ‘seer’? Well yes, because as the name suggests he has to see someone to tell how they have been altered. His ability makes him valuable to those wishing to uncover or harm the altered, so Daniel is mistrusted and disliked by one side and in danger from the other.
We also have other altereds, friends of Jordan -Keisha, Charlie and Sam. Friends of Daniel – Matt and Ash the only unaffected human. There is a lot of tension of the dangerous, and sexy, kinds and the difficulties people face getting to know and trust each other, whilst under stress.
This author is very skilled at ensuring the first in a series is a winner. The first in a series can be weaker because of all the world building and exposition necessary that is not the case here. The plot line and characterisation are first class. I love Annabelle Jacobs’ Torsere series I might just like this one even more! I have tried very hard not to put any spoilers in this review as this book is best read without knowing any twists etc. in advance.
I am looking forward to The Altered 2 and finding out more about Sam and Ash 😉 I highly recommend The Altered as a well written enjoyable read.
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
