Hard rock band Schadenfreude is finally on the verge of the success that’s eluded them for the last several years. With Aaron McClure as their new lead singer, nothing’s going to stop them…except maybe a steamy, secret relationship between Aaron and bassist Bastian Koehler. Aaron knows all too well what can happen when band members get involved with each other. After all, his last band was a casualty of his last relationship, and Schadenfreude forbids band members from dating for that very reason. But Bastian is too hot to resist, and besides, it’s just sex, so what’s the harm?
Bastian has just gotten out of a long relationship with his volatile ex-fiancée when Aaron catches his eye. The sexy singer is irresistible, and in spite of the potential for strife within the band if this comes out, Bastian can’t help himself.
Their passion in the bedroom is rivaled only by their ambition as musicians, though, and pretty soon, it’s going to tear them, and Schadenfreude apart, if they can’t get back to playing with the band.
This was a reread for me. I first read it back in 2012 when I was devouring anything I could find which involved Musicians.
This varies a little from the usual storyline involving bands. There is no management team making threats or lining up pretty women to act as beards. The pressure all comes from the band members themselves which in this case is even worse as it also involves family members.
Aaron McClure has just left his band and is returning home after his relationship with another band member broke down and then split up the band. The only person who knows the whole story, that he is gay and was dating a male member of the band, is his sister. The rest of his family think he was dating the female drummer.
The pressure on him is immense. His parents mock his chosen career and want him to settle down and get a real job. His brother and sister want him to join their band and help them finally break into the big time having just sacked their lead singer. He wants to be honest with everyone about his sexuality but is scared of the repercussions.
His brother and sister are in a rock band Schadenfreude with brothers Andre and Bastian. When Aaron roles up to audition for the band he is nervous about coming face to face with Andre, the boy who starred in his teenage fantasies. That is all blown out of the water when he comes face to face with Bastian. The young gangly boy he remembers is now a stunning man and although Aaron keeps reminding himself not to mix pleasure and business it’s pretty obvious from the subtle glances and sexual tension that this pair are not going to be able to stay away from each other.
There is a lot of sneaking around, a lot of hot and passionate sex, and a crazy ex who follows Bastian everywhere and then to really mess things up there are declarations of love. All the while the band practise, attend gigs and catch the attention of record producers. Just as you think everything might turn out ok the crazy ex enacts her revenge and everything falls apart.
If like me you like rockers I am sure you will like this one. There is very little angst up until the end and then an entire books worth is thrown at you in a couple of chapters before Bastian puts his big boy pants on!
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
