Dark Soul: The Complete Collection by Aleksandr Voinov ~ Book Review by Christine

This series was gripping, entertaining, and erotic. After I finished each volume, I found myself immediately opening and devouring the next like pieces of dark, sinful chocolate. It was a delicious pleasure to re-read it as part of our spotlight on Aleksandr Voinov’s retro reads!

Love lights even the darkest soul.

A killer’s moral compass rarely points true, and among made men, being gay is a capital crime. But Silvio Spadaro, deadly prodigy and heir to a Family fortune, is determined to find his own way–at the feet of the man he loves or by the barrel of a gun–no matter the dangers or costs.

Stefano Marino lives a comfortable–some might even say enviable–life. As a mob boss at the top of the food chain, he has it all: money, respect, a beautiful wife he loves as much now as the day they wed. But he also has a turf war on his hands, and far too soft a heart for this dark business.

When Silvio is sent to help Stefano with his turf war, sparks fly. Stefano loves his wife, but he wants Silvio. It’s a desire he hardly knows how to process, but Silvio, ever the patient predator, maneuvers Stefano closer and closer to his bed each day. Stefano resists; giving in to these dark desires means giving up on his marriage, and exposure would surely mean death. Yet there’s no denying Silvio’s magnetic pull, or the long-repressed urges inside himself. Yielding is inevitable, but he may yet find a way to hold on to everything–and everyone–he loves.

Christine’s View:

A mafia boss. An assassin. A romance? Yes!

Silvio is a dark, twisted character, a killer, and sex on legs with questionable moral boundaries. This makes him intriguing and captivating as a man and as a player in this sinfully erotic story. Stefano, a married mafia boss who simply cannot deny his attraction to the dangerous Silvio, acts upon his desires despite the many struggles it creates. His motives and guilt are clearly defined, and he is torn between his love for his wife, his reputation and duties as a Mafioso, and his intoxicating passion for Silvio.

Despite the transgressions of the characters, they are undeniably appealing in their attraction to one another. Their edginess and violent tendencies are juxtaposed with a tenderness and vulnerability that plays well on the page. Silvio harbors a strong need to belong, and Stefano is a protective, guiding force for his loose cannon lover.

Secondary characters, particularly Stefano’s wife Donata and Silvio’s brother Franco, are strong, significant players and crucial to important plot events that move the story forward to a climactic and satisfying conclusion. Their scenes are wicked and erotic, and their connections to Silvio and Stefano are brimming with loyalty, love, and lust. Readers should note the tags associated with this review for awareness of the nature of these relationships and the sexual acts that are performed within them.

The story itself is intriguing, rife with tension, and sexy-smart. Events play out as one might expect in a story about a mafia boss and an assassin, the inner workings of organized crime a presence that is strong in action but not laden with cumbersome details. The impact the corruption has upon the characters dominates the story, along with the need for revenge, control, and power in gang warfare. Adding to these conflicts is the development of a taboo sexual relationship between two men in a world that refuses to allow such a liaison.

I adore Aleksandr Voinov’s writing beyond words. It’s intelligent, gritty, and pure genius. He created a way for me to become fully invested in characters who embrace violence and immorality, rendering me helpless as I fell in love with these men and the relationship they build with one another.  Conflicts abound within each volume, yet conclusions are clear and satisfying. Altogether, the Dark Soul series is a wild ride into danger, murder, passion, and love.  I highly recommend it to anyone who loves m/m romance with an edge….an extremely sharp edge!
