For the past few days, I’ve been editing. Ugh. It’s not that I hate editing, it’s… okay, I hate editing.
Because let’s be clear here. By the time I get my manuscript back, I hate it. I think it’s terrible. I can’t believe anyone wants to publish it. It’s the worst thing I’ve ever written. I never want to look at it again. So obviously my editor is lying when she tells me how much she likes this story. What would she know? She’s crazy!
Editing, for me, falls under the necessary evil part of writing a book.
I like the writing part, and I love the part where I have a book, but I really, really hate the stuff that comes in the middle.
And I love to hate my editor, at times like these. She’s like one of those aggressive personal trainers that you see on TV, and I’m like one of those people crying as they’re forced to lug a backpack full of rocks up a hill.
Except, of course, she’s not that that at all. She’s lovely, and supportive, and, incredibly, she knows just the right way to improve my stories and make them better. She’s able to read the thing though, and point out exactly what works, what doesn’t, and what needs fixing. Sometimes it’s a lot of work, but it is always worth it in the end. Even if it still feels like lugging a backpack of rocks up a hill.
So to all the editors out there, yes, we curs your name at times, but we absolutely know we couldn’t do this without you. And do you know what the really crazy thing is? You let us take all the credit! Editors rock.
I mean, sometimes you make me want to cry and beg for mercy, but you totally rock.
I also wanted to mention that in July I’ll be attending EuroPrideCon in Munich! Yay! The awesome JA Rock is meeting me there, and we’re going to be talking about co-writing. To all the Europeans out there, or anyone thinking of taking a trip to Europe in July, we’d love to meet you in Munich!
About Lisa Henry
Lisa likes to tell stories, mostly with hot guys and happily ever afters.
Lisa lives in tropical North Queensland, Australia. She doesn’t know why, because she hates the heat, but she suspects she’s too lazy to move. She spends half her time slaving away as a government minion, and the other half plotting her escape.
She attended university at sixteen, not because she was a child prodigy or anything, but because of a mix-up between international school systems early in life. She studied History and English, neither of them very thoroughly.
She shares her house with too many cats, a green tree frog that swims in the toilet, and as many possums as can break in every night. This is not how she imagined life as a grown-up.
