K.T. Black on Wicked Magic (Spellbound Book 1) ~ Excerpt, Interview, Rafflecopter Giveaway
1. We are here today to talk about Wicked Magic (Spellbound Book 1). What can you tell us about it?
I’m excited to be here, thank you for having me.
My debut novella, Wicked Magic, is a contemporary lesbian fairy tale set in the imaginary seaside town of Castleton, MA. When developing the overall plot of the story, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, and an old movie called Bell, Book and Candle were my main influences. Like all fairy tales, there is a wish, the mysterious arrival of the love interest with a secret, and someone with malicious intentions for the couple. There are witches, a magic mirror, and if you look closely, a shape shifting Fairy Godmother.
Wicked Magic is the first book in my Spellbound series, which can stand on its own, but will be tied to the other books that follow it.
2. Tell us more about Chandler and her neighbor?
Chandler, my modern Cinderella, is a video game designer who enjoys her work, but makes little time for much of anything else. She’s a bit of a tomboy and a techno nerd more comfortable in the virtual world than the real world. When it comes to love, she’s guarded and cynical, due mostly to being raised around a father who was indifferent, and a stepmother who was harsh and callous.
The arrival of Chandler’s new neighbor, Alex, turns her world upside down. For the first time in her life, Chandler finds herself attracted to a woman, which she initially tries to resist.
Alex is a well-known photographer/artist from New York City with a few voyeuristic tendencies. She’s a confident bisexual woman who at one time abused her power and was a bit of a player, but is starting to realize she wants more out of life. She moved to Castleton to teach photography classes at the local college, trading her high glamour, high stress lifestyle for a more sedate one. But she’s more than she seems, with a secret or two.
3. What about Wicked Magic makes you the most proud?
It’s my first published story, so it will always be special to me. I’ve learned a lot going through the process of writing and editing it. What I hope is with each new story, I can take what I’ve learned and make the next one even better.
4. If you could give one piece of advice to aspiring writers, what would it be?
Don’t give up. If writing is your passion, don’t let fear or other people talk you out of doing it. Rejection sucks, but when someone finally tells you yes, it makes it all worth it.
5. What is the nicest thing a reader has said to you in a review, email, in person, or on social media?
Well, my eBook has only been out since the first part of March, and I’m still building my following, so I don’t have a ton to choose from. I think the nicest is one telling me they enjoyed the story and are looking forward to more of my work. It’s nice to not only get a review, but to learn someone actually enjoyed reading something I wrote.
6. If the world were going to end tomorrow, how would you spend your last night on earth?
I would like to be on an island in the Caribbean, down on the beach with my friends and close family. I want to be laughing and having fun. And, in that final hour, before the end came, be paired off with some beautiful, skillful man and go out with a big bang.
7. What are you reading right now and what is next on your to-be-read list?
I am terrible about reading right now. Between balancing marketing, writing new stories, and real life, it’s been difficult making time. The book I’m in the middle of is Die Again by Tess Gerritsen. Past that, I don’t know what would be next. It all depends upon my mood when I finally finish the one I’m working on.
8. Rapid Fire Time
- Hamburger or Hotdog? Hamburger with Swiss cheese and extra dill pickles.
- Seafood or steak? Steak. Never been much for seafood, and I live by the ocean.
- Strawberries or pickles? Both, but I like dill pickles over sweet.
- Country or City? I like to live in the country away from the masses, but need access to the city.
- Love Story or Thriller? Might seem odd since I write romance, but I enjoy a good thriller.
- Fire or Ice? Fire. I hate being cold.
- Favorite alcoholic beverage? Long Island Ice-T.
- Red or White? White and Blush. Red is a little too heavy for me.
- Fisting or Watersports? Wow! What a question. I may be a bit boring by saying neither.
- Read or writing? Writing. I like being in control of the story.
- Peanuts or Cashews? Peanuts, especially if surrounded in chocolate.
9. What are you working on? What is next?
My editor/publisher just notified me that my short novella The Assistant has been accepted. It is a straight contemporary paranormal romance that involves dreams and a character that can transform between a succubus/incubus. I’ll see how this one is received and may create a new series out of it once I finish up my Spellbound series. I believe it has potential for some interesting sexual scenarios.
Currently I am working on Book 2 of my Spellbound series. It’s called Strange Magic—a variation on Alice in Wonderland. At this point in time, I see at least one or two more books past that. Different fairy tales with a modern spin, but all the books will be linked together. The second book will elaborate further on just what direction I’m planning on taking the series. All the books will be contemporary full of witches, magic and some shape shifters, with the end game being a lesbian relationship established.
Chandler stared at her, feeling like a tongue-tied idiot, unable to respond. When she managed to make her mouth work, her face burned as her shyness overwhelmed her. “Um, I’m Chandler. Chandler Gray.”
Alex appeared intrigued. “Very nice to meet you, Chandler.” She peered into her eyes for a minute or two before her gaze drifted downward. She took her time, making it seem obvious as she took in Chandler’s body.
Her boldness surprised Chandler, but she found herself unable to move. When Alex shifted her focus to their joined hands, Chandler felt her stomach flip. A mischievous expression filled Alex’s face as she looked back up into Chandler’s eyes.
Chandler remained frozen in place until she felt the soft caress of Alex’s thumb on the back of her hand. Experiencing the initial stirrings of arousal, Chandler panicked and let go of Alex’s hand as she took a step backward.
Feeling embarrassed and a bit perplexed, Chandler shuffled from foot to foot, but couldn’t seem to look away from Alex. It was as if the woman had some unseen power over her.
About the Author:
K.T. Black often mixes genres when creating her romance stories. Whether her (F/F or F/M) stories are filled with witches or regular people, they frequently include mystery/suspense, sci-fi, fantasy or paranormal elements. She never limits the direction her imagination takes her when telling a good story.
When she’s not writing, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, going to movies, cooking, traveling, playing video games, and meeting interesting/eccentric people–many of whom help color the worlds she creates while writing.
