To live through the zombie apocalypse they have to survive each other first.
College freshman Parker Osborne is having the worst day ever. He humiliated himself trying to pick up a cute guy, he hasn’t made any friends at school, and his stupidly hot jerk of a TA gave him a crappy grade on his paper. He’s going to drop Adam Hawkins’ film class and start fresh tomorrow after he’s had a good sulk.
But Parker’s about to find out what a bad day really looks like—if he can survive the night.
A virus is unleashed, transforming infected people into zombie-like killers. After these quick and deadly creepers swarm campus, Parker only escapes thanks to Adam swooping him onto the back of his trusty motorcycle. Now they’re on the run—and stuck with each other.
When they’re not bickering, they’re fighting off the infected in a bloody battle for survival. Their only hope is to head east to Parker’s family, but orphaned Adam has a secret he’s not sure Parker will accept: he’s a werewolf. Can they trust each other enough to find some light in these dark days?
I adore shifter stories but will admit I have read very little about zombies so wasn’t sure what to expect from Kick at the Darkness and how the two would work together.
Well….they kicked ass!
Parker is adorable from the word go. It’s almost a life ending event when he gets a C- on a paper from a testy TA known as Adam Hawkins. What should be an easy elective is now responsible for damaging his GPA, then add on the fact that he gets turned down by a cute guy he asks out and his day couldn’t get any worse. Until he goes out to grab a coffee later that evening when not only does he bump into Adam again but he has to be rescued by him when the world goes to shit and zombies are running around the campus eating people.
Having a virus unleashed that sets off a zombie apocalypse is unique and scary as hell. Adam and Parker survive on luck and keeping their wits about them as they drive off on a motorbike called Mariah to take cover. Their journey is epic and stressful but somewhere along the line they change from enemies to friends. Then in a moment of bravery Parker, who has never before kissed a guy, takes a leap and things in the shower get steamy! Any thoughts of Adam being straight have to be quickly revised. Suddenly they have gone from friends to lovers.
For all the drama going on around them as they make their way across country in search of Parker’s family this is quite a sweet love story. It has some very romantic moments and is not short on hot sex scenes, this pair are really good together. When unexpectedly attacked Adam has to reveal his big secret, he’s a werewolf, albeit an inexperienced one, and poor Parker is left totally confused with information overload about what exactly exists in the world.
When they arrive at a secure hotel it reminded me a little of stepford wives. All around was chaos but they were having movie nights and salsa dancing. Not everything is as it seems and they find themselves in a tricky situation. The ending seemed to be left open and I wonder whether we will see a second book in the series. I certainly wouldn’t mind reading more of Adam and Parker’s story.
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
