Gryphon’s in trouble. Captured and tortured by humans, the ancient vampire is dying. The humans gave him enough blood to continue his torture, but not enough to heal or free himself. He’s on the brink of death when a meal is tossed into his cell.
Nick knows all about the monsters lurking in the dark corners of the world. Unfortunately for him, it’s the human ones who try to kill him. Broken and bloody, he’s thrown into a cell with a vampire. Knowing he’s dying, Nick offers his blood to the vampire, willing to sacrifice himself to save the tormented man.
Gryphon accepts Nick’s offer and the first drink of blood will bind them together through a life-changing adventure. The worlds of human and supernatural collide, catching Nick and Gryphon in the middle…
Nick of Time is book two in T.A. Chase’s Preternaturals series. After a prologue that got me in the feels, it picked up right where book 1 left off.
This book was not what I was expecting. I thought for sure this would be about Rover or Bandit as they were well established in the first story. So when this one turned out to be about Nick and Gryphon, I was a bit confused. However, as the story progressed, I understood the need for this story. It was another side of the big bad that started in book 1. It also introduced vampires and their characteristics and their mating practices. It introduced preternatural dynamics and politics, and the way each species viewed the other and how they interacted, or didn’t. I learned more about shifters from the perspective of others while learning that there were many types of creatures of the lore that existed in this world. It was a great continuation of the world building established in book 1.
I have to admit, I felt a lot like Nick for a good portion of this story. I was a bit confused and annoyed that no one would admit what Nick had become and what was going on! Everything was so secretive. While this is usually a good plot device, after a while, this one started to annoy me.
However, once Nick’s new identity was revealed and the story started moving forward, I was so invested. I loved learning about Nick’s new powers and I loved the idea of a search for this mysterious book. This story was like a mini version of “Natural Treasure” meets “DaVinci Code” only with preternatural creatures and legendary locations. It was great. I was fascinated and could not wait to find out where the book was! At this point, the romance took a back seat to needing my curiosity filled. I will admit, I was a bit let down when the book was actually located in the second place they looked. But the author made up for that with the ending.
An what an ending. The author intentionally set things up for the plot to continue in the next book. We still need closure on Grimes and his followers, Jess and Pavel, and the mysterious book. This was very much to be continued plotwise, but not relationship wise. Nick and Gryphon’s relationship was tied up nicely.
While Gryphon and Nick’s romance was not my main interest in the book, it was still very satisfying. I love how the men could not get enough of each other, but were constantly interrupted or in the wrong place to do anything about their desires. They were HOT but also loving and fun.
I am so ready for book 3. I need to know what will happen next and I need answers to my many remaining questions! I need to know Pavel and Jess end up together. I am glad I picked up this series!
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
