Recently, I participated in an #RWchat, which is a weekly Romance Writer twitter chat (see https://twitter.com/rwchat for more info).
One of the questions asked was what writers inspire us. Now, I came into romance sideways—I was always more of a fantasy reader and writer, but I found myself loving works like Sharron Shin’s Twelve Houses books, which have a decidedly romantic bent. And then I discovered m/m.
But when you ask me who inspires me to write, I tend to fall back on my fantasy favorites. I mentioned Michelle Sagara West and nearly fell off my chair at how many romance writers and readers love her epic fantasy written as Michelle West.
I thought I was the only one. I mean, I know there are fans out there, because I’m subscribed to a West fan mailing list. But she’s kind of not the first person people think of when you say “long-running epic fantasy series.” And not even when you append “written by a woman” onto that.
The other thing is that I’ve been so conditioned to think of fantasy and science fiction as the realm of male readers and writers–even though I know this is false.
The corollary is that I forget that women, lots and lots and lots of women, read fantasy and science fiction and have always read it and written it.
So, I shouldn’t have been surprised that folks in a romance chat would read West’s books. Romance readers/writers read widely and across genre. Women read widely and across genre and we love deeply complex books.
It’s just a matter of reprogramming my noggin with the truth rather than the line I’ve been fed for years and years.
As far as Michelle West goes, if you’re interested, you can find all the books she’s written as both Michelle West and Michelle Sagara on her website, here: http://michellesagara.com/bibliography/
I’m very fond of The Sacred Hunt, The Sun Sword, and The House War books, which all tie together. I adore her Chronicles of Elantra books, too. Those are actually a great entry-point into her writing, if you’re not ready to read 14+ long-ish books of an epic fantasy saga!
