IN EPISODE THREE:
Sid Rivers begins his attack on Phillips Marn Law. He has set his associates in motion and pits his wits against one of the greatest legal minds in the South. Jack Brown is still a mystery man, but as his cover begins to unravel, new players come into the game, and they’re about to change everything.
This series, this particular episode in this series, demonstrates Shire’s spectacular ability to construct a story. To regulate the ups and downs, the changes in pace and tenor, how the mundane and the intense can be mashed up to produce a read I found difficult to banish from my thoughts as real life beckoned.
In other words, when I wasn’t reading, I was thinking about Jack, and Sid, and Cheryl, and Drake and Sweeny, and this complicated rabbit hole into which they’ve all tumbled for not nearly as complicated reasons: revenge, guilt, greed, survival, denial, and all manners of need.
There are a lot of moving parts in this series, with more being revealed in this episode. Motivations, blind spots, dreams, double crosses that come to be revealed as the exact opposite, and passion and lust taking center stage.
Yes, the overall mystery are the identities of all of the puppet masters.
For me, the much more intriguing mystery is why Sid and Jack continue to be drawn to one another. They don’t know, either, not really. Jack appears to have more knowledge of what’s going with the legal machinations, but does he really? And what’s Sid’s endgame, really?
Each time something unexpected happens, it leads to more questions. I love that! Keep me on my toes just like the characters.
When I finished this, no joke, I went right to episode four.
I love how each episode has ended. I can see the fade to black, I can hear the music, and I feel the need to binge read!
Oh wait, already did that. 😀
