EPISODE FOUR: With Jack Brown’s cover completely blown, it’s time for Jack to reel Sid Rivers in, even if he has to break the man to do it. Jeffery Marn knows his firm is under attack. Client’s are leaving, his private files are in play, and his senior partners have become targets throughout the South. But he’s not going down without a fight. He’ll go to any lengths to make sure he survives.
Everything feels real. Everything is, frankly, jacked up. Expectations are falsely portrayed and just as falsely met. To say things are complicated? Fuggedaboutit, we’re so far beyond that now.
We learn more about the pasts of both Jack and Sid in this episode. We also learn the history behind some of people in their lives. We also get glimpses of how alike they really are. Now, if only all those complications and histories would take a hike, maybe they’d be able to see that for themselves.
The mystery keeps unraveling while still maintaining such a tight hold on the story, revealing as many secrets as questions asked. I love that. Give me answers but then ask me more questions, never letting up.
That’s actually a great way to describe this episode and the series as a whole: it never lets up. Ever. The tension and sexiness, the constant uncertainty about who’s who and why they’re there, and the ever changing role of who’s the “bad” guy and who’s the “good” guy.
Oh, and this is hot.
Once again, Shire’s smooth writing, fantastic structure and pace, and realistic dialogue all lead to a delectable reading experience.
Oh oh oh!! One of my fave cameos ever. A brilliant literary easter egg!!
