Sid Rivers is now in the hands of an enemy. Jack Brown must decide how much he’s willing to let Sid suffer while he and his crew continue to hunt for his elusive prey. Larry thinks it’s time to make his move and take the firm, while Jeffery Marn decides to show all of them how he became a master of the legal game.
Wow, this starts out brutally, and with so many moving parts and characters.
Then, everything and everyone scatters, and we get a truckload of a meaty story.
We get a lot more of Jack’s history in this one, which is one of several areas of concentration: the warring law firms, the questions of who all really holds the control, who is working for whom and why, and deeply personal mysteries needing to be solved for just as deeply personal reasons.
The depiction of every day activities that are vibrating with tension and anticipation is something at which Shire excels. It might look like two people using computers to find their friends, but the weight of it, the thick layer of adrenaline covering everything, betrays the truth: it’s life and death.
Sid and Jack are alike in so many ways but haven’t yet figured out how to admit, accept, and take advantage of this. I think it’s about time they skip the figuring and get right to the doing. Given the way this episode ends, they don’t have much choice. To say that there are many layers of complication is putting it mildly.
Drake. This guy. Not only does he tell Jack how it is but he experiences something life-changing, two things that cement him as possibly my favorite character in this serial.
Sweeny. Dude, who knew? You right demanding animal, you! Sexy grrrrr!
Twists and surprises, revelations and admissions, they are in full force. The ending has them all. All!
Complex, swimming in the expanse of moral grey area – and some not at all grey – action, sexy, sophisticated dialogue, and the simplest of gestures, all of it adding up to possibly the best episode thus far. Things are beyond messy, plans have been shot to hell, and some of these characters are experiencing things they never thought they would, most of it quite surprising.
I have no idea where this is all headed and I can’t wait to find out.
