Detective Cristian Flesh is about to find out that he can only run from his past for so long.
When a local man is attacked and the suspect is a hustler, Cristian knows there’s more to the case than meets the eye. His investigation will lead him into a maze of lies, deceit, and underage prostitution. But that’s only the beginning as people start disappearing and turning up dead. Cristian begins to realize that solving the case and stopping the murders won’t be enough. If he wants to make his new life with lawyer Colby Maddox work, he’ll need to face the demons of his past and put them to rest once and for all.
Note: This takes place between In the Flesh and Flesh & Blood.
God, what a day. Testifying in court is one of my least favorite things to do. It’s a lot of sitting and waiting and I have to wear my Class A uniform. The Class A is slightly less comfortable than the regular uniforms, which I hated. One of the best things about becoming a detective was getting out of those itchy polyester things.
This particular case wasn’t a pleasant one to begin with—a firefighter had killed his wife and tried to blame it on a home invasion. Scotty DeWitt had done a fairly good job at the cover up, but not good enough to fool me. I’d figured him out the minute I interviewed him. His grief was phony, though he’d done some damn good acting. First I tracked down the guy his wife was having an affair with, then I poked holes in the home invasion theory, then I got a warrant to search the apartment. Forensic evidence gave me enough evidence to arrest him, but I hadn’t gotten him to confess.
Dewitt plead not guilty despite the mounds of proof that he’d killed his wife. That forced me to put on the dark blue uniform and wait for hours until I was called to the stand. D.A. Richard Cahill asked me dozens of questions and DeWitt’s attorney, Erica Gilliam, asked even more. She tried to trip me up, but I’m no dumbass, I know how to handle lawyers. After all, my boyfriend is one.
After the testimony, the court went into recess for the day and Cahill sent me home. I didn’t want to go home to my lonely apartment so instead I drove to Colby’s place, hoping he was there and not working late at the law firm. Thankfully, his car was in the driveway.
I went to his place as he was putting his keys on the counter. “Hey, big guy,” I said.
“Bello, I wasn’t expecting you. Did we have plans?”
“No, but I just got out of court and didn’t feel like being alone.”
He smiled, strode to me and pulled me into a hug. It felt good to have his arms around me. My nickname for him was apt—he was a very big guy. Not fat, just wide and muscular. I put my face in his neck and breathed in his familiar, manly scent.
Colby stepped back and held me at arm’s length, taking me in. “I know you hate your Class A uniform, but I think it’s damn sexy.”
“You’re crazy.” I chuckled. “These are so damn uncomfortable.”
He grinned and winked at me. “Why don’t you take it off? Slowly.” He led me over to the couch and flopped down.
“Are you serious?” I asked. “You want me to do a strip tease?”
He fondled his crotch. “Yes. Please?”
The way he phrased it like a question made my cock harden. “You want it, you got it, baby.”
I began with the two sets of three buttons on my over coat. I slowly opened it before dropping it to the floor. I loosened my tie, pulled it over my head, spun it on my finger and tossed it at Colby.
“Yeah, baby, so fucking hot.”
His excitement fed mine in the most erotic way. I slid my hand down my chest to my crotch where I grabbed my hard prick, outlining it so he could see I was as turned on as he was.
“God, you’re gorgeous, bello. So glad you’re mine.”
