What are the Preternaturals supposed to do when the book holding the destruction of their kind within its pages is stolen from them? Not panic and hope that the situation changes before the humans get their own hands on it.
The werewolf Rover Canis can’t believe he’s escorting the very creature that stole the book holding spells that could kill every Preternatural in the world. Yet here he is doing so, and admiring his extremely attractive companion probably isn’t the smartest thing he’s ever done either. But if he is to save himself along with all his kind, Rover needs to keep his mind on the mission.
Elwin Ice Cloud, a shapeshifting dragon, swipes the powerful book in order to save his kidnapped sister, but he never plans on handing it over to the humans. Yet when dangers grow too difficult for him to handle on his own, he returns to the lycan on whom he’d been spying. Meeting the sexy Rover gives him something else to think about, yet falling in love isn’t in his plans either.
Together, these two very different shapeshifters must find a way to trust each other in order to save all the Preternaturals from certain death. If they somehow manage to do so, will love be their ultimate reward?
I have been waiting for Rover’s story since book 1. The author has been hinting about it and teasing me and it has so not been fair! Thank all the gods out there that I finally got his story.
And what a story! We are back in the action of finding the missing book and Grime’s lair and we FINALLY discover who this mysterious watcher is! And oooooo its a sexy dragon come to tempt our own sexy Rover. It is about time his world gets shook up in the romance department.
Through Elwin’s entrance into their lives, we learn about more preters and we learn more about the book and what happens if the spells are executed. We get a bit more information about species dynamic and elders of the council. And we finally get to see the big bad get his! This story had a lot of action in the plot department. I loved seeing the preters come together to get rid of Grime and his followers. I enjoyed the rescue mission and I was soooo happy to see Pavel returned to Jess. I really hope this is not the end of this series and and Pavel and Jess get their happy.
We also find out more about Rover’s past love that he alluded to in book 1. What a sad story and it only made me want Rover to find his happy even more than before.
I do have to say there was a shift with this story. As far as Rover and Elwin’s romance was concerned, I never understood the love. I got the attraction but there was never really anything on page to tell me why it turned to more than that. Maybe it was a fated mates thing, but that hasn’t been the way of this in this series so far. In addition, throughout this story, there were always secrets Elwin kept guarded. I never really felt those secrets were ever revealed. I kept waiting to know more, and maybe it was all revealed, but I never made that connection.
I also noticed there were some inconsistencies in the details in this book when compared to the previous. And there were times I felt things did not flow as well as they could have. This story felt a bit more rushed than the previous three and there were also a lot more proofreading errors than in the other books. I still really enjoyed this book and think it was a good addition to the series, but I think it was the weaker of the four installments so far.
Even with the few issues I had with this story, I loved it. It was just as fun and entertaining as the previous three and I am still so enamored of this series. I want more. I want Jess and Pavel’s story and I want to know how Raze and Ba’el came to be together.
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
