Sometimes letting go of an obsession leads to something better instead.

A twenty-five-year high school reunion is Conrad’s chance to finally come face-to-face with his unrequited love, Todd. Instead, he discovers he himself was an unrequited love for Gary, his friend from the chess club. When the two return to their old gym locker room, long-lost friends at last become found loves. As for Todd, well, let’s just say that karma can be quite the bitch.

A story from the Dreamspinner Press 2015 Daily Dose package “Never Too Late.”

My View:

Twenty-Five Years is an excellent example of how short stories should be written. In addition to an engaging plot, the main characters were created perfectly, with the reader knowing exactly what was needed to know. In some short stories, the characters are given too much extraneous back story that isn’t important to the story.
It starts with Chance debating whether or not to go to his twenty-five years. An issue many readers have gone through themselves. Chance’s decision hinges on one thing, or should I say one person. Todd Smith. Chance crushed on Todd in high school and even had a single, erotic encounter in the locker room.
At the reunion Chance instead runs into Gary, who in addition to crushing on Todd, was also attracted to Chance. The reunion doesn’t go as expected for Chance, it turns out way, way better.
This is a sweet and humorous story with an HEA, something I wasn’t expecting.
I loved this short story very much. It was everything a short should be.
5 stars.
