When plumber and builder Jordan Novotny goes to take a look at the home of the town’s openly gay, recently dumped librarian, he doesn’t expect to find anything other than a falling-apart old house and a water heater in need of repair. Instead, he finds an older man in need of some TLC and a new circle of friends after his ex tossed him aside for a newer model. Stephen might be attracted to Jordan, but he thinks the young man is exactly that—too young. It takes Jordan’s family interfering and a bit of a mishap to make them see that it’s never too late to find a new love, and that age is just a number. All that matters is compatibility and the courage to take a chance.
A story from the Dreamspinner Press 2015 Daily Dose package “Never Too Late.”
This is very short and very sweet and drew me in from the beginning.
Stephen was an interesting character. He is the out and proud librarian, a slightly older gent, in a small town who was recently and I think quite publicly dumped by his younger lover. He’s a little flamboyant and a lot messed up. His friends have deserted him, he’s lonely and starved of human contact and something as small as a plumbing problem has him wringing his hands with anxiety and having a mini meltdown.
Jordan has recently discovered a new side to himself and has decided at the very least he is bisexual. There is no big drama or any real angst with this decision and his family support him completely. When he arrives at Stephen’s house to fix his plumbing he is like a gentle giant and he calms the older mans frayed nerves with a hug.
It’s a funny romance. They kind of date without really calling it dating. Stephen is really dating Jordan’s whole family who take to inviting him for dinner nearly every week. From friendship comes attraction and finally a kiss.
I would have loved to have seen a bit more of Jordan and Stephen. I just felt like I was getting to know them when it faded to black with one of my pet hates….it finished abruptly at 68%!
