Last month, I talked about losing my little kitty, Michael. Well, this past weekend, I decided to celebrate the 4th of July by adopting a new kitty-friend.
I had a list of what I wanted:
- 2-5 year old male, because kittens are a lot of energy and work!
- Kitty that gets along with other kitties.
- Lap cat
- Not black like my current cat, so I can actually tell them apart.
Best laid plans, right? So, I came home with Nemo.
Nemo is a ten-month-old mostly black kitty who is shy and skittish, but so so wants the love and the pets. He’s nearly the spitting image of Smokey, too.
But he’s also sweet and cute and has the most pathetic meow I’ve ever heard. It’s nearly silent so it’s more like a tiny little “uhhh.”
I love him already.
This is kind of how my writing goes, too. I have plans. I outline. I think I have it all worked out! And then I get there and find out that I have to scrap half my outline or more, and what I thought the book was about isn’t. And yet, it all works out. Often better than I’d expected.
I went to the animal shelter to find a cat unlike Nemo and yet brought Nemo home because he was the right kitty for me.
I outline with the best intentions, and the story becomes its own because that’s the right thing for the book.
Which kind of makes sense. I think writing is often exactly like herding cats.
What plans have you made that have turned out being scrapped because life presented a better option?
