Theater student Caleb Stockwell is ready to leave college behind. Too bad his past isn’t ready to let him go.
With less than a month to go until graduation, Caleb runs into Nathan Rhodes at a house party. Nathan is a star hockey player for Western Michigan University and finally ready to step out of the closet. He’s also the guy who broke Caleb’s heart in high school.
Nathan’s determined to make amends for what he did four years ago, but Caleb isn’t willing to risk getting his heart stomped on again. With only a few weeks left before they go their separate ways, it’ll take all of Nathan’s creativity and help from some interfering friends to convince Caleb to give him a second chance.
I rarely write a story intending for it to be part of a series, but while I was writing “Bully & Exit” I realized very early on that I wanted to go beyond a single standalone book. It’s probably the earliest I’ve ever made that decision, but one of the supporting characters, Lowell, leaped off the page at me and I knew I had to write his story. Another supporting character, Micah, demanded his story be told as well. As of right now, The Midwest Series will contain three stories, each focused on different couples although there will be cameos from the other couples in each story. Just because I’m planning three books doesn’t necessarily mean there won’t be more. As I write the second and third books, I may discover new supporting characters whose stories need to be told as well.
This is the plan for the first three:
The first book, “Bully & Exit” is set in Michigan, the state where I was born and currently live. Nathan and Caleb attend Western Michigan University. There are flashbacks to their relationship in high school and although I never explicitly named their hometown, I pictured a small town along the west side of Michigan, near the Holland area. It’s a conservative part of the state and although it’s not where I grew up, I knew people who did and am familiar with the mentality of areas like it. My husband grew up in the Kalamazoo area and graduated from WMU, so that was familiar to me as well.
The second book doesn’t have a title yet (the working title is “Road Trip”), but it will follow Nathan’s roommate Brent, and Caleb’s roommate, Lowell, as they take a road trip through the United States, ending in the Chicago area. Brent is newly out of the closet and ready for a fun summer with his best friend, Nathan, when Nathan cancels and Lowell takes his place. Although there is plenty of attraction between Brent and Lowell, there’s a lot of friction as well. Brent resents Lowell for taking his best friend’s place and Lowell has a massive fear of commitment. There will be plenty of friction until they figure out they’re better together than apart.
The third book is the least planned out. As of right now, it’s called “Micah’s Shoulder Injury” (my working titles are so creative). What I know so far is that Micah, a baseball player (and Brent’s former friend-with-benefits), has a career-ending shoulder injury. He’s deeply closeted and very uncomfortable with who he is. His future love interest, Justin Fletcher, is a physical therapist and very comfortable in his own skin. He’s socially and politically active in the gay community and has a serious dislike of dating guys in the closet. How they get together and what happens later remains a bit of a mystery, and probably will until I get further into “Road Trip”, but I am very excited about this entire series and the way it’s coming together.
There is a bit of a sports theme to it, as Nathan and Brent are hockey players, and Micah is a baseball player. The series is all about opposites and the couples have very little in common on the surface. But that’s what will draw them to each other and as they all eventually find out, that’s what strengthens the relationship. The clash of personalities will lead to a lot of tension and passion and I am eager to share the stories with you.
