When Aiden agrees to run the Mad Mucker—a twelve-mile muddy slog over an obstacle course—he’s expecting it to be a bit of a laugh. The training will be tough, but Aiden could use the motivation to regain some fitness.
Matt is the sexy cousin of one of Aiden’s coworkers and a last-minute addition to the team. When he agrees to train with Aiden, Aiden suddenly finds the prospect of regular workouts a lot more appealing.
Soon attraction flares, and they embark on an intense physical relationship. Matt doesn’t want to fall in love with a man, and Aiden doesn’t want to fall in love at all, but despite their insistence on no strings, they grow closer. As the day of the race approaches, time is running out for them to work out how they feel about each other.
Nothing Ventured was a well-written story with realistic characters and an entertaining plot. It didn’t knock my socks off but I liked enough that I will be checking out other books written by Jay Northcote.
The overall plot with characters training to run for The Mad Mucker, a 12 mile obstacle course. Aiden isn’t thrilled with the idea but agrees to train with Matt, a cousin of a coworker, who he believes to be straight.
I enjoyed the progression of Aiden and Matt’s relationship, from friendship to friends with benefits to more. Aiden fights his attraction at first but that changes when he learns Matt is actually bisexual. Matt admits he likes guys, though he doesn’t have relationships with them. That’s fine with Aiden who doesn’t have relationships, just sex.
When Aiden and Matt finally get to fooling around, let me tell you it is smoking hot! The chemistry between these guy was off-the-frickin’-charts. Northcote definitely knows how to write a sex scene. Every time these guys got naked it was incredible. I didn’t get bored and tune out like I do with some sex where it just goes on and on. I was captivated the entire time.
The supporting characters in the tale were also well-crafted and I especially liked Aiden’s fuck buddy who helps him to see he cares for Matt.
I absolutely loved the scene where Matt confesses his feelings. It was unique, definitely not something I’ve seen before in M/M.
Matthew Lloyd Davies did a good job with the narration. He did well at differentiating several characters. My only complaint is that his older sounding voice didn’t perfectly fit with the younger characters.
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the audiobook of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
