Alex Stern has it all; good looks, charm, a job he loves and everyone calls him a friend. He lives life to the fullest at a breakneck pace, in the city that never sleeps. But Alex is also a master pretender; not even his best friend sees the pain that Alex hides so well. Alex himself isn’t sure who he is or what he’s searching for, he only knows that he hasn’t found it yet.
As a veterinarian, Rafe Hazelton loves each animal that crosses his path; they don’t care if he stutters a bit or that prefers men. Their love is unconditional, but his life is still empty; they can only give him so much. New friendships convince him it’s time to break the wall of loneliness he’s hidden behind since childhood and discover what he’s been missing.
Alex and Rafe forge a friendship that turns physical, and they both swear that the relationship will last only as long as the fun does. But when old heartaches come to light and secrets hidden for years are revealed, Alex and Rafe discover if they accept what’s in their hearts and take it one step further, the greatest reward is waiting for them in the end.
While One Step Further is not technically a sequel to Felice Steven’s Memories of the Heart, it does use a main characters first introduced in MotH, Alex and Rafe. We also see Micah and Josh a fair bit in this one and even their sassy grandmas. That all being said, you can easily read One Step Further without having read Memories of the Heart (though I do recommend MotH, as well).
Rafe has spent most of his life alone. A stutter and a negative self-worth have led Rafe to spend his life with animals instead of people. Alex is the opposite — boisterous and always the life of the party — but his action are masking a much deeper fracture. When their respective best friends go away on a long honeymoon, and their paths cross, Alex can’t resist trying to break Rafe out of his shell.
Alex and Rafe’s relationship is slow to build. They start as little more than acquaintances, but step by step they build more. They build their foundation. Then slowly they let each other in on their secrets and their hurts. They slowly learn to depend on each other. They slowly find their HEA.
This is not an insta-lust turned HEA in two weeks. Alex and Rafe each have a lot of hurts they can work through until they can find room in their hearts for the other one. There is just enough push and pull between these two men to keep me turning page after page and a tissue or two handy.
What do you have next for me Ms. Stevens?
