What if bad guys ruled the world and the good guys were the outlaws?
The future is a city on Mars where the government rules with an iron fist of hatred. Romeo is part of the Outlaw MC. He’s a patch member with a hard-on for danger and flirting is like breathing to him. His world caves when the government finds him having sex with another man. In this world, homosexuality is punished by death, dark skinned men are slaves and women are used for breeding. With a warrant now out for his execution, Romeo must take his leave of the only life he knows and join another MC that lives under Mars’ surface.
Justice is the Underground MC president. He’s survived slavery and the harsh environment outside the city. He’s prepared to push all the MC’s toward taking down the government but he hadn’t planned on his attraction to Romeo. The flirt thought with his penis and it almost got him killed. The war for equality doesn’t need that kind of liability. Justice has a hard past but when his life’s in danger, only one man comes to his rescue and he sure wasn’t expecting it to be the flirty white guy.
Can Romeo handle Justice’s tongue and teeth?
An action-packed beginning and an immediate connection to Romeo, our narrator in this story: not a bad way to start!
Enter: Justice. Or rather, enter: Romeo into Justice’s home, his MC. Justice is a beautiful black man about whom Romeo already feels intrigued and attracted.
I nodded and then realized I was doing that. I stopped, cleared my throat, and looked back to Justice. He wasn’t bad to watch. The way his mind worked intrigued me. The way his body moved made my promise of being good sound like a faraway whisper.
One of my favorite parts of this particular story in this series is the role Mars plays. The physical descriptions rubbed my sci-fi loving self in all the right ways. It creates this cradle in which some rough and tumble people are fighting to right some deeply embedded wrongs.
Cox continues to improve in providing that sense of place through physical description. This goes for both the environment and his characters, and how they interact with it, and each other within it. It was so easy for me to picture Justice’s lips gently pressed to Romeo’s pecs while the Mars landscape surrounded them. Mm hmm!
Now, before I get too serious, I must tell you that Cox ability to do porn for the page also continues to improve. He picked the right characters for the encounters between Justice and Romeo. No hiding, no shyness, they both go for it, letting themselves jump off that cliff of physical (and maybe emotional?) need.
In some places, Cox’s staccato sentence styling feels out of sync with the scene itself. I’m sure it’s a personal choice in storytelling but commas would come in handy. He also spells things out more than I prefer when reading a story. Sometimes it feels like it fits the characters but then it goes beyond that, giving me all the fact, not letting me work for some of it, which lessens my engagement.
As much as this story was about the characters, it was also definitely about place and circumstance: Mars and the fight for freedom, and the role of the various MC’s and their members in wanting and trying to make that happen. Lives are literally on the line.
Deserving special mention is Romeo’s love of being bitten, and Justice’s willingness to oblige. 😉
I’m enjoying this series more and more the further into it I read. My curiosity is at full attention, wondering where everything is leading, how things will be resolved, and who will survive.
Amidst the loss, destruction, and failure, Romeo and Justice manage to share some hot, bright, and strong moments. And don’t worry, Cox’s humor shows itself, breaking through the haze of over-the-top:
”Apparently you were serious about eating me.”
Justice laughed and pulled me in for a kiss.
What’s next? Will they defeat the megalomaniacal leader of the city, winning freedom for all?? What about Lover??? On to book 5!
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
