I’M A BIT OF A LUDDITE
Something you might not know about me is, I’m a bit of a Luddite. For those of you that don’t know what a Luddite is, it’s basically someone who doesn’t like technology.
As a writer I use technology every day. Nowadays the biggest majority of things are done online, as you probably know. The publishing industry is no exception. While there are still some agents/editors/publishers that prefer doing things the old fashioned way, there are less and less of those.
Where edits used to be done with a red ink pen marking up a manuscript, these days it’s standard practice to do the same thing using Word’s track changes.
There are days when I want to pull out one of my typewriters, put away my laptop, and lose myself to the rhythmic clicking of keys that just isn’t the same on my MacBook Pro. Seeing the word count climb in my writing program isn’t nearly as satisfying as seeing the stack of pages climb higher and higher as you finish another page.
While I can appreciate the perks of being able to send something across the world in the blink of an eye, or not having to worry that your precious manuscript could be misplaced by the postal service, I don’t know that I’ll ever stop missing life before technology took over.
Just this morning I told hubby I was thinking about getting rid of my cell phone or maybe getting one of those prepaid ones for those rare occasions I leave the house. I figured I could check into getting a landline again. He looked at me like I had just sprouted a second head or peed on the rug.
More and more I find myself dreaming of a small cabin in the woods. No neighbors. No cell service. No cable television. Just peace and quite. Me and my typewriter.
About Lynley Wayne
Lynley was a 2014 Lambda Literary Awards Finalist. She published her first book in September of 2012 and hasn’t looked back. When not writing she can found reading or coming up with creative ways to avoid housework. While Lynley Wayne may be a pen name, the woman behind it is very real and believes everyone is entitled to their own version of happiness. She looks forward to the day when who or how we love is no longer an issue.
