When alpha shifter Mikael Volokov is called to witness a challenge, he learns the evil and power-hungry Anton Gregor will stop at nothing to attain victory. Knowing he will need alliances to keep his pack together, Mikael requests a congress with the nearby Evergreen pack and meets Denton Arguson, Evergreen alpha, to ask for his help. Fate has a strange twist for both of them, though, and Mikael and Denton soon realize they’re destined mates.

Denton resists the pull between them—he has his own pack and his own responsibilities. But Mikael isn’t willing to give up. The Mother has promised Mikael his mate, told him he must fight for him, and that only together can they defeat the coming darkness. When Anton casts his sights on Denton’s pack, attacks and sabotage follow, pulling Denton and Mikael together to defeat a common enemy. But Anton’s threats sow seeds of destruction enough to break any bond, and the mates’ determination to challenge the darkness may be their only saving grace.

My View:

It has been a while since I have truly, without reservation loved an Andrew Grey story. While he is my most read M/M author, I started to get burnt out on reading him about a year or so ago. That isn’t to say his quality suffered, just that I, personally, had to take a break from reading his stories. However, he is still one of my first favorite M/M Romance authors and will always hold that honor. His Range series is still a favorite series in the genre.

If you are not in the “know” in the genre, you may be wondering why I am waxing Poetic about Andrew Grey on a review of a book by Dirk Greyson. Well, in the grand tradition of authors everywhere, Dirk Greyson is another pen name for the author that we know and love as Andrew Grey. The purpose for the change is that Dirk’s stories are going supposed to be grittier than Andrew Grey’s stories. I have long held that Andrew Grey writes great comfort reads. Dirk is supposed to write something with a little more bite.

In the case of Challenge the Darkness, that “bite” is literal as it is a shifter story. If you look at Grey’s backlist, you will not find a shifter story available. He did have a fantasy series very early on, but it is even currently out of print.

So now onto the story itself. I adored this story. I have not always been a shifter fan, but I can appreciate a good shifter story. One thing that makes a good shifter story is taking chances and not following the shifter formula. TWO ALPHA WOLVES ARE FATED MATES. If you didn’t get that from the blurb, you should have. Seriously, TWO ALPHA WOLVES ARE FATED MATES. How cool is that? Takes the whole “two alpha males” trope (which Grey has shown us he can do in the By Fire series) to a whole new level.

In addition to the whole battle your mate for dominance thing, they have to actually figure out how to make it work from a political (for lack of a better term) standpoint. They are each head of their own family/pack. Oh and there is that whole evil wolf wants them both dead thing, too. So much packed into this story.

While it is definitely grittier and a little more twisty and turny than your typical Andrew Grey novel. Those who love Andrew the way he is will also be able to appreciate the responsible and organic way these two alpha wolves fall in love. It isn’t insta-love, but it is insta-respect. They work together against a common enemy regardless of their relationship status. Of course, there is a happily ever after and an opening for a few more stories in this universe. Christopher needs a story, please.
